Michele's Story

I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. Music, reading a good book, taking a walk.......THESE are things that I like to do when I need to relax. Gosh, there are many times, in our lives, that we need to clear out heads and start over. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my earrings, LOL. Next I would need orange juice and a hard roll, to be able to deal with the day-to-day. This we learned at St. Peter's Hospital School of Nursing, in Albany, as we started our student life. My hero is my Mother, who was there every day when my children got home from school, after my husband died, when I had to work...Nutses never left on time then and today, it is probably even worse. Having another adult during the good and the tough times was a gift, always appreciated, even to this day. Happy 89th Birthday Mom, August 13, 2009. A very interesting question ( What happened to my first crush?). I met him when I was 11 years old. My aunt an uncle moved back to Troy and opened a Mom and Pop Store called "The Pic Up". LOL, never thought anything of that name, then. They knew a family who had lived across the street from them who had four boys. Jack, was the youngest (15), so the hired him to do the stocking of shelves etc. I am sure that I drove everyone crazy, since I was always there, visiting my grandmother, who lived upstairs with my aunt and uncle. Eventually, with my parents permission, since all the families knew eachother, we went on a first date to the Bijou Theater, on 112th street, in Lansingburgh. We could walk there, as well as to Carrier's Soda Fountaine, and The SnoMan Ice Cream Stand, which is still there, selling ice cream, today. When I graduated from CCHS in 1960, I became engaged, and entered St. Peter's for Nursing, along with a good group of my other classmates. After graduating from SPH, in 1963, as a graduate RN, I married my late husband, the next month. We met when I was 11 and married when I was 21 and he passed away, when I was 37. I knew him for a long time.. Today, is November 24, 2014...So, where did all the time go, where have I been and what did I do. I spent 10 tears, living in Florida, caring for my Mother. Patti and her husband lived up the street, so I wasn't alone. Mom passed away, last August, 2013. And, here I am, home again, in Troy/Watervliet/Latham. Jackie, my oldest and only daughter, and her husband Jim, live in Latham. Their daughter, my granddaughter, Liz is finishing her Master's Degree, in Buffalo. She is an Enviornmental Engineer. She is hoping to work, in the Buffalo area, since her boyfriend, Andrew, finishing his master's also, will be study...Expand for more
ling for his PhD, and I always get this wrong, in Aerospace Engineering. Well, anyway, he has had a couple of Summer positions at different branches of NASA, so you can get the picture. My oldest son Patrick, lives in Speigletown, with my grandson DJ ( David John) , named after both his grandfathers who are deceased. He is going to HVCC. Sister Casey is stuyding at Paul Mitchell, in Schenectady, to be a Hair Stylist and she is doing great. Older brother Ryan, is in Californai, working with Computers. Sons Sean, John, and Michael, all live in Lansingburgh and are taking good care of me and each other. Any my youngest son, Kevin lives in Waterford with Sue and youngest child, Taylor, such a sweet young girl. Son Zachary is at Siena. So, I am not alone here, LOL. We call my 5 sons, "The Brothers", they are very close distance wise and family wise. I am very lucky. My sister Patti and husband Wally still live in Floridam, down the street from where Mom and I lived. And, this being almost December, I will be missing it, for sure. But, they did come up, last Summer and I did get to see both of my sisters. I was lucky enough to be visiting in Rochester, to see Patti , daughter and her husband plus the kids, who are no longer kids, one, Kaylea studying Music, on scholarships, in Nashville, one studying Music Therapy, in the South, this is Meghan, and then David, last but not least, who just started High School in Penfield, and who just got his Black Belt, in Karate, rounds out the group. Patti's other daughter, Patti and husband Todd, and their two boys live in Florida, so Patti and Wally aren't lonely when they are there. From there I went by train to Syracuse to see my other sister, Lee. It was a great week since we were able to see the Musical "Damn Yankees", in the Merryground Theater, there. It's a nice little theater and we have gone several times for some really good shows. This Spring, there are some really great shows so that's where I will be heading for a while. When I am there, I am very fortunate, to have an apartment, across the hall from Lee, all to myself. Ann, Lee's friend, allows me to stay there whils she stays with family. God is Good ! I love going to Proctor's and the Palace Theater's, here in the area, for their great shows. In the past, I would come from Florida at a specific time, to see a ceratin show that was playing. I have been here for a year and hope to see some of my CCHS and St. Peter's friends, as well. So, here we are, and I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas, to you all. Happy Holidays to those of you, who do not celebrate Christmas. And, hopefully we all will be healthy, happy and prosperous in the New Year 2015.
