Michele's Story

Well, here I am at 25 years since graduating from high school. Do I have some regrets? Sure I do. I know I wasn't the greatest friend to some of my closest friends. I had some mixed up priorities in school. For those of you who tried to save me from making a big mistake, I thank you now. Wish I would have listened then! But, it hasn't all been bad. What can I say; it's been an interesting life! After graduating from PVM, I went to work as a cosmetologist, got married to my HS sweetheart at 19(which I know now was WAY TOO YOUNG-ppl tried to warn me), built a house and a life, had my only daughter, Amanda, at 23. It was then that I realized we were destined for different things... Went through a painful divorce after 8 years of marraige and spent 6 years as a single mom. Then, just when I had made peace with Mark, he suddenly died at 34 years old. That was one of the hardest days of my life, to have to tell my 9 year old that her father died on Easter Sunday. That same year, I was already engaged to a wonderful man, Gene, and we were married in Hawaii, on the beach, toes in the sand, in 1999. I inherited 5 grown step-sons from my husband(this year we will be married for 10 years), and also 10 grandchildren! I have become very good at feeding and entertaining 23+ people in my home at once! Yes, he's older than me, but somehow it works for us. He is my rock. He has been a wonderful dad to Amanda in every way. Now, Amanda has graduated from high school and is in college. I have started college myself, part-time, and I really enjoy school now. I don't think I would have appreciated it then. Living on the NY State Canal on the Seneca River, it feels like we're on vacation all the time. In the summer, we're really homebodies. Nice, casual living, I like it. We still like to get away from the CNY winters now and then. I would love to move somewhere else where there is no snow! I love the sunshine. tayed home to raise Amanda until she went to school. No regrets there. Then went to work for a non-profit working with adults with disabilities. That was incrediblly challenging. I have learned a lot about people in the process. People with disabilities aren't fake. They are who they are, and you can be yourself around them. They will always accept you, no matter what. Taught me a lot about accepting faults and unconditional love for one another. Now, for the last 9 years I have worked in school system as a Special Ed Teaching Assistant, starting in the elementary level, and for the last 3 years, in the high school. It's never dull...I watch kids now and see how wrapped up they are in the social aspect of school and for some, it's all they have! I try to explain to them that there is so much more to life! I belong to a church, sing every other Sunday on the worship team, contemporary music, electric guitars, it's really rockin'. It's fun and challenging. I am an alto, so I have harmony parts to learn. I have a wonderful teacher, which makes it easy. I'm definitely not one of those fundamental christians, but I do have a strong faith in God. He's taken me through a lot over the years. I think I have learned some good coping skills(that don't involve drugs or alcohol!) Where am I going now? Just recently, I decided that I wanted to be around horses again in my life. I have always loved them, having 2 when I was younger. My 2009 goal is to get involved with a local stable and immerse myself! Now that my daughter is grown(well, almost), it's my turn, right? I would like to continue to take more college classes and see where I end up. Those of you who have taken the time to read this, I hope you have found it to be worthwhile. I hope your memories of me in high school are good ones. I have many good memories of all of you! I hope to hear from you soon!
