Michele's Story

Life After Ringling art school, worked for Hallmark (card designer) too many fuzzy bunnies, to confining. I hated the mid-west, and tornados. Returned to college for masters in teaching, first in N.J. Have retired. I was teaching Sculpture/Drawing at Sarasota High in Fla. (38 years total) .....I have three kids. Two daughters, Melissa, Lori and son Adam. Yes, I'm a cougar, and married ART Altenderfer, hometown boy, class of 65. Now retired civil engineer. Have gotten this man to move to NC,,up on my mountain called "Freedom" (Andudaleste)..We have moved to a neat town called Murphy N.C. Big old log home, with art studio. Studying Tai-chi to keep the bones moving. I'm alive and I consider that a great thing. Found out after 50 years, that my real father was Native American, really into Cherokee/Tuscarora - language/song and have cousins on the res. and a 1/2 sister. Went through lots of shock and disbelief but finding comfort in new religion and attitude. Still talk to Joan Herrmann Dawson(best friend)...Expand for more
Kora Huismann, and many folks from my husband's class. Still married to my ART. 46 years.. I collect antique dolls..and Native American stuff. Like to wear Buffalo tooth necklaces and deer skin dress. It feels like the real me...New skin-old body-but better brain. I was invited to join 28,000 Native American relatives in the walk/pow-wow, for the opening of the Smithsonian Native American Museum. It was the 5th most proud moment of my life, next to getting married and having 3 kids. You will find me there, with my father and my kids, on the memory wall. I feel Indian, I think Indian, because I am Indian. Best gift, I'm a Grandmother: Josephine Helena and her brother Fritz, children of Melissa and David Andre. Lori and Tyler Dutton have little Winston now almost 4 years old. Tyler gave me another grandson, his son Spencer now a freshman in college. Have been very blessed. Still trying to conquer Tsa la gi (language) but I'm slow. Lucky I remember yesterday. O see yo, ah gee naw lee. Toe he juh ney he?
