Michele Burton:

CLASS OF 1978
Wilmington, DE

Michele's Story

My life had changed so much when I left my 1St cucoon & family at Christ Our King. I lost my faternal grandfather in Nov. of 8Th grade, my dog Tiger of 13 yrs. in the spring, and my beloved father, Clarence E. Yarbough, the last day of school before summer vacation; all while attending 8Th grade at Talley Jr. High. I can't even begin to speak of the love, respect, and admirtion that I had for my father, but those close to me at C.O.K., which was most of my class, know how much of a DADDY's GIRL I was, BUT please remember one thing; if your parents are still living, show them everyday (or every chance you get) how much they mean to you, and how grateful you are that to have them in your lives. I will say one thing, thank the LORD that he was not on earth physically when I got to high school !!! I went to Concord High, and my mother told me that I should get involved in a sport. WELL, I became a Football Manager, and a Basketball cheerleader!!!!! I am proud to say that I was 1 of 4 girls that was the 1St all girls Football Managers in the state of DE! And you know me, I ran those boys; they respected me, listened to me (because they knew they would get titty twisters if they did'nt), and they all were my brothers; well except for one, my boyfriend of 3 yrs. Jeff Hale. He started Varsity in 9Th grade, and was an All-Star running back! His parents were actually at my wedding to the man I met at work and married in 1995, David L. Burton; he went to DIckenson High, and is 1 of 4 boys (well men know). Back to high school: I was popular, in the Jock crowd, hung out with mostly wealthy Greek and Jewish kids that ruled North Wilmington. The teachers in high school used to let us get away with 95% of everything that we should not have done like skipping (especially after the CA Achievement Tests-got a run at a liquor store or raided someone's parent's stock & drove down to the Valley and sunbathed). I was nice to anyone and everyone that was to me. Actually, I broke the bounderies between the Jocks and the Burnouts-people who smoked cigerettes who just hung out on the smoking court; I even had to battle some of my friends when it came time to respect people that were over weight, average looking, etc... Don't get me wrong, my close friends were nice people, but they grew up rich, sheltered, and not exposed to mosts things besides North Wilm., Florida, Greece or any place they were invited to travel to with their parents:) I loved my high school years at Concord High, and I would even go back and relieve those times if I knew what I know now (crazy hah)! I did go to Springer Jr. High for 3 months in 9Th grade; that was until word got out that I was bi-racial. I not only put up with crap from some A-hole guys in my school, but when word got to Brandywine High, things did'nt go to well. My mom was a nervous reck because some of the guys (that looked like men) used to come and wait for me behind the school when I walked home. I of course did not back down to them, and when they said sh_ _, I gave it right back. But one day they physically threatened me, as in r_ _ _ _ & killing. Well, I walked right up to them and told them that I wisk they would put a hand on my because I would have more than one van of guys from Chester waiting to make their lives a living hell for awhile! The vice-principal actually called me into the office the next day, and asked if I would go out of the front of the school and walk the long way home; of course I told him "NO"! January, sitting in my only favorite class with my favorite teacher, Mr. Fitzgerald-science class, I get called to the office; my mom and sister Beverly were waiting for me. I cleaned out my locker, went back to Talley Jr. High were the administration told my mom to have her license changed to my sister's address, and I started back at Talley on Monday (my grades went up and I was put back in accelerated English and Science)!!!! Do you know that my Biology class in 9Th grade at Concord was the same curriculum that we had in 7Th grade; I think Mrs. Consiglia was the teaher, but I could be wrong:) Ok, my arms are tired so I'll make it short; after high school graduation I went to: Del Tech, Delaware State, worked at AIG, AIGM, CIGNA, ACE (all insurance companies), got married on Nov. 11, 1995, had my 1St son, Chace Clarence on 6/2/97, went back to work after 3 yrs. off, got pregnant again in 1999 but I was losing my 2Nd dad to the same cancer that I lost my dad to & I lost the pregnancy via ER surgery May, 1999, lost my father-in law the end of June 1999, AND got the PREGO itch again the closer I got to 40 yrs. old, so what I want I get - Connor Reese joined us 12/31/2003 AND HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE ME (I MEAN SPLITTING IMAGE)!!!! Unfortunatetly, for the rest of the family...Expand for more
, he acts like me to. And, my father always said that I had a motor on my butt when music came on, well you should see my little mini-me; he can dance, break dance, pop and ALL!!! My son Chace is in 6Th grade at Springer, and he'll be 13 yrs. old in days; he now looks about 60% like his father, and he acts like us; he can be quiet, crazy-funny, caring, thoughtful, and then the light switch goes on short circut and he goes bilistic. Oh, the most important part, my mom gets to injoy all of this at the age of 80 (she'll be 81 on 8/16/10), but she'll cuss them out like a trucker driver; they listen to her and behave for her better then they do me because I'm the softy. My boys have to really push me before I snap, and then they think I'm crazy, but I might smack their butt 3-5% of time they should have an A-whippen like I used to get! In my past, I've dated whomever I wanted to, from an Egyptian, Tunisian, English (and he was like ice cream on a hot summer's day - on the whole, besides Princess Diana, my idol, and her eldest son, I do not think people from England are very attractive). Sorry that's prejudice, they, I've been on the receiving end for ever-you try being born in 1964 to an interracial couple, and you going though what I did-I have the right as everyone else to be prejudice alittle, as long as I'm not hurting anyone). I have 9 nephews, 2 nieces, and 7 great-nephews/3 great-nieces, 2 wonderful handsome brothers and 1 out 3 sister that I talk to; it;s my decision!! Oh, and yes Gigi, my brother Eddy, 56 yrs. old, built like a stud, tans like an American Indian, and more handsome now than when had a crush on him; you would probably have to wear pantyliners if you saw him now (HA, HA, HA). Gigi, tell your hubby to keep his pants on; we're talking about a childhood crush that's over 30 years old! Before I leave you all, I have to tell you that I went to San Francisco to see Mark Spencer when I was around 25-26 yrs. old. And I will tell you this, oh his head is so huge now, when I stepped off the plane and saw him standing there in a suit, thank the Lord, I was wearing pantyliners!!! He looked like a model, but don't worry, we were brother and sister by the next day. Nothing had changed beside him growing some huge cohonas, and acting the male version of me; accept I have to admit, Mark lost his temper and did'nt take S_ _ _ from ANYONE! I HAD THE BEST 9 DAY VACATION OF MY LIFE, with the exception of him taking me in a convertible to Oakland shortly after they big earthquake/fire in the very late 80's. Oakland is similar to San Fran with steep roads, but they are shorter and at the end of most of them there was a guard rail and if you could'nt stop you went over a steep mountain-like embankment right onto a major 4 lane highway!!! Mark, the speed demon had to push it, and we ended up fighting. When he was finished with Show-N-Tell, had him stop at a very small neighborhood conveinance store so that I could get a drink and have a cigerette, when I came out Mark and his lady at time, his dog that looked like a minature terrier-rat that I called Fi-Fi was gone. I was so mad that I wanted to cry, and when I'm mad enough to cry I want to kill you, but I leaned up against a break wall in the shade and tried to think of getting home to DE. I did'nt have my ticket or I would have called a cab, but in a few minutes, here comes Magnum PI and Fi-Fi around the corner!! Of course after a few minutes I forgave him and we were partners in crime on our way to Sacramento!!!! Want to have a GREAT time, go visit Mark Spencer; but ladies, don't touch my brother, or I'll kill you:) I often think off all of you that became me family at Christ Our King, and I honestly want to tell you that I love and miss you all !!!! I hope your llives are blessed with happiness, health, wealth, friends, and most of all, FAMILY!!!! I hope to hear from you soon via email, phone 478863_ (last digit was the grage we were in when we had the teacher with the short skirts, V-blunging tops tops, blond haired, and cool); remember we faced the front of the school and we were the last classroom on the Rectory side), or call me at work at The Hotel DuPont 59431_ _"DOUBLE _ 7"; most likely I will answer, but if not just ask for me. I only work P/T, 2-3 days per week, and I usually start at 2:45pm or 3:30pm; definitely can reach me by 4:15-4:30pm. Oh, if your in the area, stop in; I work in the Front Desk Hospitality division, so just go to the Front Desk and ask for me if you do not see; you can also put up to the Valet guys and ask one of them to call me to come out if I'm there, and they will know if I am working. Well, take care, be safe, and know that you are remembered fondly with love!!!! Your friend and sister, Michele Yarbough-Burton
