Michelle's Story
Update for 2026: I am officially retired after 20 years of federal government service and am now searching for my next phase.
Life
Within the past three months, I finished the last quarter of my Masters degree, moved to downtown Portland, rented out my old house, became a Toastmasters Area Governor, completely switched careers from Training to Employee Relations and am contemplating whether or not to put up the financing for my husband's latest business venture. I need a break. I am planning yet another trip to Thailand and one other SE Asian country (Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam, I can't decide). I've already done the backpacking through Europe thing, climbed the Great Wall, snorkeled in Jamaica and Belize, and traipsed through Central Asia. It is time for the next adventure. College
No more all nighters! Life is too short to worry about an obscure paper. UC Santa Barbara was beautiful, but I didn't have time to enjoy it as much as I could have. Portland State University is a unique urban campus and I recommend it. The Hatfield School of Government ranks high among other public administration concentrations across the US, so if you are considering a career in public service, I highly recommend you build a foundation here.
Workplace
Since my undergrad years, I have had stints as a peer counselor, an art retail specialist, a television services grunt worker, a library special collections assistant, an English teacher trainer, a foreign exchange program orientation leader, a substitute teacher, a staffing assistant, an intern for the office of the mayor of Portland, an event planner, and a worldwide training coordinator. In short, I have been dabbling in life. I finally found my niche as the "one who talks people down from ledges" as an employee relations specialist, and wouldn't have it any other way.
