Michelle's Story
Lived across the street from Tropical Elementary and Riviera Jr. High then Graduated '69 from SW. Hung out with the guys from Chaps fraternity during high school. In '69, married a Marine, Jim Glover (from Coral Park), had two kids (Troy and Heather). Lived all over Florida, including 8 yrs in Panama City, Fla. Legal assistant for 34 years and real estate agent. In '96, divorced Glover and moved back to Miami. In '98, married a '71 SW grad, Jeff Septer. Jeff owned White Star Roofing Company in Miami for 30+ years. Moved from Miami to Melbourne in 2004. In 2008 bought Twin Lakes Fishing & Camping, LLC, RV park in Cross Creek (Hawthorne) Florida, 15 miles south of Gainesville, 19 miles north of Ocala on Lake Lochloosa at County Rd 325 and Hwy 301. Would love to see SW grads camp with us. We have cabins, boat rentals, air boat rides, rv sites, lots of fishing and hunting.
One of the wildest things I ever did in high school with George Rompf and Ronnie Stewart, gymnastic team, was throw an egg and hit an off-duty cop in his car and got chased by them in their Volkswagon and us in George's Woody Stationwagon from Bird Road and 102 Ave. to 87th Ave and US 1 where we ran out of gas. I threw the egg (the only one I ever threw) and the cop gave George a black eye when he punched him through the driver side window. Not one of my better moves. Then I remember the cop making George use his shirt to wipe the egg off his front wind...Expand for more
ow. Fortunately, George did not hit the cop back so they did not take us to jail. George didn't even get mad at me. It was too funny and ironically my son is a sheriff's deputy in PSL today. Amazing how things change.
I also remember we used to park at the civil defense canal at Miller Rd and 87 Ave. We used to go to Crandon Park and party in the life guard shack.
I remember skipping school, going to Chuck Treadway's house. Fred Sanstrom wanted me to cook him breakfast so I fed him dog food that looked like hash with his eggs. Fred Sanstrom, me and who ever else could pile into my '57 Chevy would go shrimping and fishing from Rickenbacker Causeway. That was a great date! Smelly, but great. I remember I almost gave my life for a tarpon I had hooked on the third bridge. I was just getting him over the top railing of the bridge when I tripped over the median strip in the middle of the highway. I was pulling him over the top rail and almost got run over by a car. I have to say that tarpon was almost worth it.
I also remember skipping school and getting caught by my mom who drove us back to SW and dropped us off. Of course we went right out the back door; walked to Royal Castle on Bird Road and 87th Avenue. Again,I saw my mom outside the window at the red light in her car and threw myself on the floor of Royal Castle so she wouldn't see me again. I can only imagine now what the other patrons in RC must have thought.
