Michelle's Story
After graduating high school on May 21, 1988, I enrolled at the UNM-Gallup Campus and registered for full-time in the General Studies Program. In 1990, I changed my major to Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts and graduated in 1993. Desktop Publishing sparked my interest, so I enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Publishing Technlology and graduated in 1995. Finished school temporarily and began job hunting.
In December 1995, I was hired as a Data Entry Clerk I with the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency's Public Water Systems Supervision Program in Window Rock, AZ. In 1997, I was promoted to an Environmental Technician within the same program. Somewhere in between here, I found my soul-mate and my significant other, Max Bighorse. Then in 1999, I almost got layed-off and that's when Max persauded me to return to school and get a bachelor's degree, so in the fall of 2000, I enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Geography and minor in Psychology. I became a part-time undergraduate student while working full-time with the Navajo EPA. In 2005, I was again promoted to a Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician within the same program.
After going to school part-time every semester for 10 years, I earned a Bachelor of University Studies (with my background in Geography, Health Education, Psychology, Sociology, and Native American Studies). I owe my educational achievements to ...Expand for more
Max Bighorse, my common-law spouse because he was the main person to persaude me to get a bachelor's degree. I plan to continue my career in the environmental field and hoping I can get promoted to an Environmental Specialist.
Other than not having human children, I have three hoof-bratz (Dots, Mister Dunn, and Firerock) and three fur children (Jed [Blue Heeler], Tobie [Pembroke Welsh Corgi], and Shelby [Pembroke Welsh Corgi]). I lost my first beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgi "Corky" to kidney failure on November 9, 2015. It was a tough to lose him and I still miss him so much. Corky and his breeding mate Sugar produced three beautiful litters of Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies. I was able to have part of Corky by picking the Pick-of-the-Litter...his tri-color daughter Shelby.
On November 23, 2015, my significant other proposed and put an engagement ring on my finger.I continued working for the NNEPA's PWSSP, which I made 20 years of service on December 5, 2015. In February 2012, I was eventually promoted to Environmental Specialist. I am continuing my career and also added the art of photography to my already busy schedule, as well as starting a side business. I've been taking photos of sports at Tohatchi and I'm sure some of you have seen my work being posted to Facebook's Tohatchi High School Alumni Association group page. I also specialize in senior photography, equine events (rodeo & team roping), and landscapes.
