Mike's Story

Life The Qtility business is up and running and generating consulting revenue. Our Qtility product is still working through iterations and getting closer to release. Life is good here in the small town of Okotoks. It is 40 minutes south of Calgary with a population of about 20,000 and growing fast. Everywhere you look you see pasture turning into burbs. Time for a vacation in NS and to get my fog fix. School It's so depressing, not.. High School was fun. I left LRHS in 70, but didn't start in 66 as the bio says. Not sure where it gets that but went to Port Mouton Consolidated and then LRHS for a year. The I attended Dartmouth High for two years and Prince Andrew for another year, for love you might say. Then a year off and Saint Mary's where I managed to get it together to be in the honours Geology program. Got married and went back for a business degree and ended up selling computers, then consulting working with databases and imaging and then training and teaching at the Akerley Campus of the NSCC. I met my second wife at that point and then took a contract in Bahrain as training manager for Documentum, now EMC Documentum, took a job with Documentum in California, then another with SquareD/Schneider-Electric in Raleigh, NC and then a consulting contract in Portland Maine and finally back to Calgary to continue consulting. Now have my own consulting firm and producing my own software product. Now I'm even working on a golf swing. Gosh, if I would only have seen my future self in 1973 I would have laid off the BBQ corn chips from the corner store on Maple St. near Dartmouth High. ;) Its been a long and winindg road for sure, baby! ;) College Saint Mary's ... What can I say. That school gave me a shot when others wouldn't and I proved them right. Geology was a "natural" for me. Too bad ...Expand for more
Trudeau had other ideas when he introduced the NEP and FIRA. No geo work for 10 years after that so I reinvented myself and went into computers. The rest is history. Good times, bad times at SMU but had fun, was a total idiot/jerk when it came to the opposite sex, and learned a little character and made some good friends. Even got whacked in the back of the knee by father Hennessy's cane for swearing in public. Go Huskies! Workplace Started in geology in '75. Worked summers for Noranda, Department of Mines and Energy, Nova Scotia, Shell Canada Resources and AMAX Potash as an exploration geologist. Then switched to business where I worked in sales for Atlantis Microcomputer, Minicomp Computers, FutureWorld Computers, Epson Canada, and then "got religion" and worked to help found the Nova Scotia Independent Living Center, then changed to training and imaging and database development work and worked for a number of part-time independent contracting jobs. Then landed at the Nova Scotia Community College teaching in the computer diploma program at Akerley Campus in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for a few years. Then something strange and wonderful happened and I caught an opportunity to work for document management company called Documentum and took it by first signing a years contract to manage training for the Middle East. I lived in Bahrain at the time . Then went to work at the Documentum head office in the Bay area in California. Deciding to get more hands-on experience with the technology I went to work for SquareD/Schneider Electric in Raleigh, North Carolina and then came back to Alberta for family reasons and worked as a senior architect of Documentum systems doing consulting for a couple of years for a company called Critical Control. Now I am working for my own software and services company called Qtility Corporation.
