Mike's Story

Life My Spouse I met my wife in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada quite by accident through a mutual acquaintance. We have been married 47 great years and I can't imagine myself without her. My Kids My oldest, Renée, is 44 years old and holds a degree in Public Relations. She has held a number of senior publicist positions with the Canadian Television Network (CTV) in Toronto and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Halifax, and Corus Entertainment. She was the Communications Officer for the city of Ajax, Ontario. She now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she ran her own firm, Horton Publicity, before being recruited by Canadian Blood Services in Nova Scotia. Michelle is 39 years old and graduated from a two-year business program in a private college in 2003. She eventually returned to school and graduated as a pastry chef. After working as a senior pastry chef for a very popular shop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she has turned her attention to raising her family. Now that her children are in school full time, she has returned to college to become a paralegal. She now works for a large attorney's office in Halifax. Natalie is 38 years old and a graduate of a private college specializing in television and radio broadcasting. She worked as an on-air traffic reporter for a Halifax FM Talk Radio station for a few years before going to Toronto to work for a major radio group. She was a morning co-host on 95.6 The Breeze in Halifax before moving to television behind the camera.. My Job Life continues to change. e job I was doing before, as an Intelligence Operator and Senior Analyst. I served in a field unit in Kingston, Ontario and went to Afghanistan in 2008, and returned to Canada in 2009. It was like I never left. There had been many changes in my 10 years of retirement but the camaraderie was still the same. I must admit it was a bit of a shock to my body - doing PT every morning like rucksack marches and runs - but everything slowly started to fall into place and I got back in shape. Kind of a hard way to whip back into shape, though. After Afghanistan, I became the Intelligence Officer at the Joint Support Group HQ. I was eventually posted back to Halifax and 3 Intelligence Company in September of 2012. Consequently, I reopened my old Combat Hapkido School in Halifax, which has consistently grown in numbers since the doors opened again in October of 2012. We are the oldest and largest Combat Hapkido Charter in Canada. I hold a 6th Dan and was inducted into three Martial Arts Halls of Fame. I am also a Status Métis Algonquin. Our family can trace its roots back to Northern Québec where our Scottish ancestor, Andrew McPherson married our Algonquin ancestor Pinesi Okijikokwe and on to his grandfather who fought in the Rising of '45. Our first Fournier ancestor was a French soldier who fought on the Plains of Abraham. whose grandson, Louis, married Andrew's daughter Philomène. Funny enough, this first Fournier ancestor's regiment was on that field of battle on the opposite side of my mother's Blackburn ancestor who was a member of the Fraser Highlanders at the Plains of Abraham..
