Mike's Story
Hello my fellow classmates - After graduating from Safford High School, my parents moved to California for a year in search of work. Of course, my brothers and I went also. I loved California and all its activities, but they didn't. My parents and brothers moved back to Tucson, where they spent the rest of their lives. I stayed in California, went to UCLA and then to a private college. I enjoyed my 20th, and 30th high school reunion, but was disappointed there wasn't anything planned for the 40th. (last year)
Been thinking of Merit College lately, especially "Mr. & Mrs. Gumpert" Great people, and very generous. I was in California alone, going to school, and they invited me to their house for Xmas. Don't think I'll every forget that Xmas in 71' - - or was it in 72'?
While attending Merit College, I was told there would be a recruiter coming to the school, to interview for a position as a Court Reporter with a large firm. I was only writing around 180wpm at this time. I went through 3...Expand for more
days of interviews, and was later told I was "hired" as a Court Reporter for the Executive Offices of Howard Hughes. It was a very exciting position, where I would fly in the corporate jet from Van Nuys to Las Vegas and take notes of the General Managers meetings of all of Howard Hughes' hotels and casinos. The pay was fair, but the benefits were even better. I stayed with Summa Corporation until Howard Hughes died, and was asked to relocate(overnight) to Las Vegas. I didn't want to leave California, and did some "soul searching" and left Court Reporting. I've had a good life, and hope to write a books someday on my experiences. I was able to retire alittle year in 2001, and now I am able to volunteer as a docent at the Ronald Reagan Presidental Library here in Simi Valley, the Ventura Chapter of the Red Cross, and the Griffith Observatory. If you interested in a private tour of the Ronald Reagan Presidental Library and Air Force One, I invite you to Beautiful Simi Valley, California.
