Mike's Story
Graduated in 1972 from FHS in the Technical Electrical Program which on reflection was far too advanced for a high school program.....the 3 years I spent under Jim Perkins are now the curriculum for the Electrical Technologist program at NBCC.......this was recognized by the professional Certified Engineering Technologist governing body in Ontario when after I wrote the Professional Practice Exam in 1998, they awarded me my professional designation. After FHS, i went to UNB where I attended Electrical Engineering classes and Business Admin for 3 years, then in 1975, I left UNB to start a 25 year career with Union Carbide, now Praxair.. I worked in Fredericton for 6 years in Administration, then 4 years in Edmonton in Sales, then 4 years in Toronto as General Manager for the GTA, then to Halifax for 6 years as Vice president for Atlantic Canada, them 4 years in Calgary as Vice President, Western Canada. am at Harvard (now an Executive MBA). After catching up on my formal education, I joined several global engineering organisations, like the Weir Group, Johnson Controls, ABB and finally Irving when I left my ABB assignment in 2009 and returned to New Brunswick. Five months into my transfer from Saint John to Moncton, i learned that my kidneys were failing and had to attend dialysis three afternoons a week. In late 2011, I retired to start dialysis and have been on dialysis for 3 and a half years now. Feeling almost normal, but have minor mobility issues which could improve if I exercised more. I feel great....I finished my PhD in Engineering Systems and got remarried (third marriage) in 2014 to a Philippine national. The process of getting her Permanent Resident status has been grueling, but all of the papers are in so we are waiting for the CIC's decision which will take 2 years. She was a Temporary Foreign Worker so she has Implied Status until we hear from CIC. Otherwise, I am happy with my life. Please feel free to drop me a note.
