Mike's Story
I grew up in a poor family in the inner city. My father was a deadbeat dad. To this day, he never paid a dime of child support. My mother was on welfare and food stamps and we always lived in public/subsidised housing. When I first started school, we were actually homeless and living with my mother's friend who had children who stole from us.
I wore pro-wings and shopped at payless. I took a lot of heat for my shoes. But we were poor and there weren't a lot of options. After a while, I started wearing $100 shoes, but I had to make them last 3-5 years because I could not afford to get new shoes every month. m a little more after they started getting old.
I seen a different life when I got to college. All the kids there were rich and could care less about bling and $100 air jordons. I was also in the minority though. Few people in high school actually drove to school. In college, few people took the bus to school. So they probably cared more about gas money and having a nice car then wearing their wealth on their body.
I graduated with a computer degree in the middle of the .com bust and could not find a job anywhere. I did odd jobs for years until I finally got my foot back in the door in my field.
I now make good money and own my own car and home. The American dream lives on.
