Mike's Story

Life I was born in a small Bavarian Village in the back of a Lederhosen Factory...blah, blah, blah....walked to school, uphill, both ways... I have been lucky enough to live all over the place. Born in Germany (Dad was military), lived all over the US, and spent about half of my life in Germany. Along the way I made some incredible friends. The number one reason I signed into Classmates is to find/keep in touch with those old friends. Again, I have been lucky...I have hooked up with Kalyn, Billy Cole, and many others. I am looking for so many more...from my school years and from my 25 years in the military. Since I never lived in one place all of my life, it was difficult growing up as a military brat. Now that I am older I see how lucky I was...instead of one set of friends from Kindergarten to present...I have groups of friends from all over the US and Europe. I could get into every little part of my life, but I'd rather you just read this and think: "Hey, Ol' Mike's on the classmates thing...I think I'll get in touch with him"...look, spend the few bucks (no, I don't work for classmates) and write me...or just find me some other way and write. Yes, I wanna hear from you...unless I ticked you off somehow. LOL School North Marion HS, Florida: A great place to finish up my years of school. Living in Salt Springs was great. Have been in touch with a few folks from there..Penny, Scott Brennan, even emailed with Mr. Philbrook a few times. Still looking forward to getting in touch with more old friends...Chris Dockery, Stan Brown, Kim Copeland, Laurie Anderson, anyone from the basketball and baseball teams...and other folks as well. Whatever happened to Ms. Jackson (female coach) and Mr. Salvage..they were good inspirations for me. Was going through the yearbooks the other day...WOW, what hair! I remember the bus ride to the Salty Dawg was like an hour and a half...I remember getting PADDLED as a Senior...Mr. Neasman tore by butt up...if I woulda weighed more than a buck-o-five it would been on...just kiddin'. Nurnberg American HS, Germany: I was devastated leaving here. All my Mom's side of the family is from Nurnberg...but also leaving many good friends like Larry Wall, George Smith, Kalyn, Sue Wall, Tina Marler, Kim McLean, all my friends fom the JV football team and from AYA sports..Albert Santa Ana, Pfisterer, Hannah, Mark McCord, the Suttons, Bobby Price, Ted Petito, Steve Adams, the Hammers, Chevaliers (their Dad coached our baseball team), Pat Spitzer...and so many, many more. I remember a Mr. Slavoski (spelling?) taught Algebra...I knew I wanted to grow up and be a math teacher...who knows, still might! Leesville HS, Ft. Polk Louisiana: I wasn't here long...but made great friends in Billy Cole (in touch with Ol' Billy), Sabine Partin, Tom Doucette and Roberta, Lee and Lum, Robert Lauck, and others. Ft. Rucker Elementary, Alabama: Don't remember too much...had friends like Steve Barton, Bettina Michaelis, and Mr. Patton and Ms. Osteen were the teachers I remember. College Wayland Baptist University...I attended in San Antonio. Most of my friends were assigned at Ft. Sam Houston and were doing it on nights and weekends...like me. I wish I had some college stories...OK, here's one: I went to a full time job each day, and then to class most nights and weekends...UGH! But I finished with a BS and Cum Laude. How ya like me now? Workplace After 25 years in the Army I figured I'd have a tough time adjusting to civilian life....WRONG! This is easy stuff. Go to work...do your job well...and get paid. In the Army I had anywhere from 12 to 250 folks to square away, take care of, mentor, counsel, or whatever...now that can be rough. I loved it...but this civilian thing is good too. I'm a certified/registered Medical Technologist (Laboratory Technologist) and I currently work as the Blood Donor Recruiter for the Armed Services Blood Bank Center - Europe out of Landstuhl, Germany. I am a contractor and work for Lockheed Martin. My job is to establish blood drives and recruit donors to meet the blood need/mission of the military here in Europe. There is no job more rewarding!...Expand for more
This job was made for me...and as a bonus I get to see Europe. Military Ft Gordon, Augusta, GA: Just left here in June 06. Retired from the Army here. I was the NCOIC of the Lab at EAMC...and had a stint as the 1SG for Student company. I think that this group of folks was without a doubt the most professional group of folks I was ever associated with. All my good friends like Alicea, Jay, Wittler, Mac, Weber, Thomas, Brian, Carrier, Chris...they are the best. The softball teams...all of these old guys killin' the youngsters from around the Augusta area..nothing like an all-day tourney filled with sun, fun, and beer! I miss Mac's short shorts, Jay's "he's goin'", Jeff's injuries, Alicea's stories and jokes. Whata a crew. The lab folks I worked with were awesome and made my job mostly real easy! The Soldiers at the hospital were great...1SG Newsome, CPT Noyola, CPT Phillips, man, I could go on... Landstuhl RMC, Germany: Great sports...and I worked as the NCOIC of Microbiology. Had a real short stint as the Lab NCOIC between senior folks leaving and arriving. Good friends Alicea (again), Spangler, Larvins, Beers, Learo, Torres, GRANT, Correll, Vasquez, Kosha, on and on...Tommy 'Strong, Wallace Lopez, Sepu, Martinez, and all the rest of the softball teams. I miss the USAREUR Tourneys at Vilseck and Baumholder...whatta great time. Havin a beer at the LCC...or at the Blarney Stone... Ft. Leavenworth, KS (USAMEDDAC); I was the NCOIC of the lab here...had great friends in Larry Bateman, Jim Bowlin, and Lance Lochmann...and great folks in the lab like all the ladies especially Arlene and Janey...and Conant, Dauphinee, Yeakley, Gilbert, Majanscik, Fitz, Taylor, Evans, Lewerenz, Trask, and others. Miss times like any party at Bowlin's...trips to Chicago...softball and the SGM Lovett's socks (gray was in)...Teri's family in Lansing. Academy, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas: I taught the 92B/91K back in 91-95. Taught the Basic Medical Lab Course and a few classes of the new MLT course. Fellow instructors and friends were SFC Blanke, SFC House, SFC Worthen, SSG Danny Webb, SSG Grant Fluellen, SFC Nancy Wolfe, SSG Sawyer, HM1 Soderquist, SSG Painter, SSG Acker, SFC Tim Lawson, SFC Buddy Horne, Blose's , and a bunch more. There was little as rewarding as teaching Soldiers how to be Medical Laboratory Technicians. I run into them nowadays and some are Officers...some are Senior NCOs...and they are doing great things in tough times. Nellingen, 31st CSH, Stuttgart: Was the NCOIC of the Lab and Training NCO. We deployed this care-taker unit to Desert Shield/Storm and did great things...I won't list the names because there are too many. However, I consider all folks from the 31st great friends...let me hear from you! NOW! I remember face games in the dark...Reforger...killin' Smith when he came out to the field site all clean...sweeping that damned warehouse...rolling rubber (you old-timers know what I mean...DEPMEDS, SHMEPMEDS). How about these folks...MARK GRADY (My best drinkin' buddy), James (just attended his retirement ceremony here at Landstuhl...May 08), Grunewald, Corey, English, Depiano, Amos, Alexander, Stets, Jackman, Luthy, Helton, Martinez, Goddard, Anderson, Dibble, Coleman, McGahee, Gousby, Linke, 1SG Saunders,1SG Hague, CPT Fox, CPT Flanagan, LT Metscher, Rambo, Alexis, Tarrazas, Wright, Maple, Clark, Peele...I don't wanna forget anyone...but I got to... AML Advance Lab Course...85/86...the is my best 1 year in the Army...with folks like Knapp, Lavender, McGowan, Kleis, Jonesy, Byerly, Schmidt, Nead, Bridey, Robertson, Wanda, Johnny Hong, Frankie Johnson, Clontz, Colleen, Candy, Matthews...where ya at? Fitzsimons AMC, Aurora, CO: I was here 11 months...beautiful weather..friends were Brad Reagan, Huebner, Tran, and others. Ft Leonard Wood....met Teri here...miss friends like Brian Jansen, Tina, Buteau, Kleis, Kolar, Sam Taylor, and others... Ft Sam 81-86....I was in the Lab and worked in Blood Bank and Micro...where you at Eddie Miranda, Kyle Little, Del Rio, Jerry Dates, Linda Benson, Oscar Munoz, Wayne Stewart, John Thomas...had Nichole here. That whole Donor Center crew was great...
