Mike's Story

Life I've been happily married for over 8 years now and life has never been better. Recently, I became a Dad with the birth of our baby boy Dawson. I still love the outdoors, and now I get to enjoy daily hikes in the Southern Appalachians. Still runnning? That ended when I tried out for Texas A&M's Men's Cross Country Team in August of 1995. Let's just say I enjoy walking now! After Westfield, I went on to Texas A&M and studied a lot but had a great time too...majored in Pre-Med and then Wildlife Biology. I never had so many friends then and probably never will again! Most importantly, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ during my freshman year. After graduating in December of 1993, I became a HS teacher and college tutor. Then there was the issue of Texas, which I have a love/hate relationship with. Love? The culture and food. Hate? The weather and geography. It was time to get out. So, I moved to beautiful Colorado for 6 months. Within 4 months, I was broke. So, I came back to Houston and met the love of my life. We both felt the same way about Texas and Houston, so we got a map out and chose the mountains of North Carolina. I got a job and we were off in the summer of 2001 after only 1 year of marriage. I taught HS Science and Math, and was a Principal too. Never thought I'd do that! After a few years, I decided to get a Masters degree so that I could t...Expand for more
each on the college level. Now, I teach biology at a community college here in Western NC. School Favorite Teachers: Mr. Moore (Biology) Mr. Music (Physical Science) I'm just a little biased here. OK, Mrs. Flynn wasn't bad even if it was English. College I miss College Station! I lived in Cain Hall, the athletic dorm, for 3 years since I still thought I was a great athlete. It's funny how high school athletics will make you think you're special and how college athletics sobers the ego. It was exciting living with the members of the Aggie Wrecking Crew of the early-mid 90's. Honestly, football didn't interest me back then. I had no idea I was living with one of the best football teams in the nation. Workplace Getting out of school wasn't easy for me. I never had to make money. As many of us were, I was a 1960-area- spoiled-generation-X'er. It took me about a year to settle into a career that suited me well. Though I never imagined becoming a teacher, I accepted a HS Science and Math position at a private school in Houston. After moving to the Asheville, NC area, I continued teaching and even became a HS principal. That was NOT a good fit. It's hard pretending to be mean to teenagers. I even laughed when a teen confessed to vandalism of school property. Finally, I attended WCU and got a Masters so that I could teach college students. That's what I do now.
