Thomas's Story

Hello, Old Friends. Here's the last Bio written for and about me. This will bring you up to date (professionally, anyway): Mike Townshend has spent over 30 years as a Human Resources Executive and consultant with a wide variety of organizations such as Western Union Corporation, The United States Synthetic Fuels Corporation, Trinity College (now University), and others. Most recently, he was a Vice President of Human Resources for HAI/Raytheon. In 1999, he founded Career and Life Learning Systems, Inc., a career and life planning company that provides materials and technology to the largest international Outplacement, Career Transition, and Talent Management firms. Mike is the Chief Subject Matter Expert for the firm. Additionally, Mike formed Carpe Diem Coaching, Inc. in 2009 to provide consulting and coaching services to a wide variety of professionals and organizations in Human Resources areas ranging from Retirement Program planning, Senior Executive Succession Planning and Development through Organizational Change Management during Mergers and Acquisitions. Recently, he has partnered with the prestigious national training firm, National Institute of Transition Planning, to provide best-in-class Retirement preparation for the U. S. government workforce. His Retirement, Career, and Change Management expertise results from years of experience as corporate human resources generalist, a consultant and entrepreneur. He has worked successfully consulting to all levels of employees. A superb trainer and public speaker, he is a frequent guest on radio and television on topics related to Retirement Planning, Leadership Development, Job Performance, and Career and Personal Change Management. R projects for such clients as Manor Care Health, Ciba-Geigy Chemicals (Novartis), NationsBank (Bank of America), First Union National Bank (Wachovia), GTE, and First American Bank. Prior to Manchester, he worked for nearly five years, specializing in Career Coaching and Pre-retirement counseling. He has particular expertise is working with people making major career shifts and who are experiencing dramatic changes in their work environments and lives. Mike received his BA from LaSalle University. He is a Hopkins Fellow in Change Management at Johns Hopkins University. He has lectured at George Washington University, Catholic University, and was recently a Senior Lecturer for The Transition Assistance Program for the U. S. military services presenting to veterans who are entering the private sector, many with disabilities requiring effective strategies for career success. Mike is the author of Four Workbooks on Career Management: 1. Effective Career Decision-Making 2. Resume Development – A Marketing Tool for a Lifetime 3. Interview Skills – Know what you Want, Ask for It 4. Efficient Use of the Internet in Today’s Career Management He has published several professional articles including, “Performance Appraisal: The 100% Responsibility Model”, and he was invited to co-present a professional paper at the IEEE Conference, Munich, Germany in November of 2007 titled “Future Recruiting and Retention Strategies for Highly Technical professionals”. Mike has recently incorporated his ideas into a book: Living Well During Times of Change, published in 2011. So, on a personal level, I'm retired now and living on Maryland's Eastern Shore where I continue to write and travel several times a month to deliver lectures.
