Mike's Story

My wife and I met in graduate school at Southern Illinois University. We both have Master's Degrees in Public Affairs. Nancy is the President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (in 2023 the CFGD celebrated their 20th anniversary going from under 0ne million dollars in assets when they hired Nancy as their first employee 20 years ago to almost $150 million in assets today). Nancy was named a Distinguished Graduate of SIU for her lifetime achievements. I have been the City Manager of Dubuque, Iowa since 1993. I was fortunate to be named the City Manager of the Year by the International City/County Management Association. Prior to Dubuque I was the Assistant Village Manager in Skokie, Illinois and a Police Officer in Carbondale, Illinois. We have 5 children and 18 grandchildren. Between our children, Foster children, Foreign Exchange students and kids that just needed help we have had over 30 children (and several adults) live in our home. Being Foster Parents has been one of the most rewarding experiences in our lives. One of the awards I feel best about is when I managed little league baseball in Skokie I was named Manager of the Year, with my oldest son and one of our Foster sons on the team. But there is no doubt the greatest recognition Nancy & I ever received was when our first Foster son, who had lived with us from 5 years old to 10 years old, retired from the Air Force in 2022. His Commanding Officer called us up on the stage and she and David recognized us as Air Force Mom & Air Force Dad. Our oldest son lives in Des Moines, Iowa where his wife is a Psychiatrist (I am hoping for the Family and Friends discount) and he is a very talented Chef who is leveraging his business degree working on opening new restaurants (first St Kildas and now 30hop) for other investors. One of our daughters lives in Woodbury, Minnesota where she works as the Public Works Director. Another son lives ...Expand for more
in Los Angeles and works for a major advertising agency as the Assistant CFO, His wife is a film Director. (Honor Society on Paramount plus). Another son is in investment banking (Northern Trust) living in Minnetrista, Mn on Lake Minnetonka. His wife is in franchise sales. Our youngest daughter works in retail in Dubuque. We are raising two of our grandchildren, Cadence (15) and Justice (14) who have lived with us since birth. Cadence is on the high school Robotics team (he is one of three programmers) and the Bowling team and Justice is on high school Wrestling team. They were both on the YMCA swim team for many years, but have given that up for other pursuits. My parents moved from Lansing to Dubuque in 2010. My Mom passed away in 2019 at 99 years old and my Dad passed away in 2016 at 94 years old one week after their 70th wedding anniversary. My Dad and Mom were both World War II veterans. In fact, their first “date” was New Year's Eve 1944 in New Guinea. My Mom was a WAC (Women's Army Corp) and my Dad was an Officer who had been injured and was temporarily assigned a desk job, where they met. In 2023 Nancy and I were honored to be the featured guests at a national Servant Leadership Conference in Fort Worth, Texas where we were interviewed on stage. We feel fortunate to live in a nice place like Dubuque, Iowa. It has beautiful historic architecture as the oldest city in the State of Iowa and is built into the rock bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River about 15 miles from Galena, Illinois. USA Today magazine named this area the third most beautiful place in America. Scenes from the movie Field of Dreams were filmed in Dubuque (and Galena) as it is 20 miles from the original movie site which is located in Dubuque County. Our two favorite vacation spots are Disneyworld (we take kids and grandkids every spring break) and Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, where we have a modest (but we love it) vacation home.
