Mike's Story

Life Enlisted in the United States Navy ten days after high school graduation. Attended boot camp in San Diego. Graduated from a 48 week aircraft avionics/electrical technical school in Millington, TN. Worked on eight types of fighter/attack/helicopter aircraft. Professional duties including as supervisor/manager in my technical field, quality assurance, maintenance control, and avionics divisions managing up to 458 people. Flew as a naval aviator for many years on A-3 and H-53 aircraft. Attended numerous leadership and counseling schools. Facilitated many types of seminars. Overseas campaigns included Vietnam, Libya, Iranian Hostage Mission, Afghanastan, sinking of the Iranian Navy, Persian Gulf, and relief efforts in Africa. Visited 34 foreign countries and 153 foreign cities. Awarded 33 medals and ribbons during my 22 year naval career. Retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) in December 1991. Selected as regional vice-president with the A.L. Williams Insurance Corporation within a few months. I was also in the top 50 of 850 NCOA counselors in the world for many months. One of eight counselors who won a six month world-wide sales competition. Electrical/avionics supervisor with Raytheon and Boeing Aerospace. Our team was chosen as one of eight teams for the Boeing Aerospace Golden Globe Award world-wide competition. Served the community for many years as a Boy Scout leader, Boy Scout Troop Committee member, Junior and Senior Vice Commander of a VFW post (won the annual national competition for best youth program), and raised funds for hospitals overseas. Presently I do errands for elderly people who are not allowed to drive. Additionally, I am very active with the Roseville River of Life Fellowship and conducted bible studies in the Philippines. On January 12, 2005 I had neurosurgery and I am on total disability. December of 2006, to my dismay, I was informed by my surgeon I will never be able to perform gainful employment again. I was married to my lovely wife, Laura, on March 24, 2007. We have seven wonderful children and ten grand-children who keep us on our toes! School I went to Woodlake Elementry, a junior and senior high school I believe doesn't exist anymore, Valle Vista and Norte Del Rio respectively. My favorite teacher at Woodlake was Mrs. Hillgrove who taught 4th grade. Laughing here....I got paddled by Mr. Schaffer, the principal, once! My favorite teachers at Valle Vista are Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Rau, and Coach Strickland. At Norte they are Mr. Streeter (Electronics) who provided the influence for my career in electronics, Mr. Nuezel (Junior English)who provided me with the courage to always try and do my best, the counselor Mr. Brown, coaches Youngstrom and Tarrow (Gym), and Mr. Costello (History). There was a black male teacher who taught U.S. History and Social Economics but for the life of me I can't remember his name. My good friends in high school were Dennis Parker, Ken Miller, Lee McDaniels, Peter Kyper (the tall giant), Johnny Chin, the Nunley kids, and Frank Morrisette. I still think of them often to this very day. If I have forgotten anybody I truly apologize. I don't have any of the year books to reflect back to names. There is one childhood friend, Terry McIntosh, I have remained friends with for almost 52 years. Currently we live just a few blocks from each other. I still keep in contact with the Plank sisters, Marty and Debbie, who are just wonderful friends. We attended church together as teens. I still remember Mark Comstock, the varsity quarterback, who graduated before I did. I ran into him a year after my graduation. We were both attending the same technical school in Millington, TN, and rented a two bedroom mobile home together. I haven't heard from him in years. I run into Eddie Belknap every once in awhile. We are good friends today, but were foes in high school. I take my hat off to Eddie and Lorraine who are still married to this day. Later in life I became good friends with members of the DaVega and Gonzalves families. I guess I can let the cat out of the bag! The girl I had the biggest crush on from elementry school all the way through high school was Donna S. I believe she is married to Manual. I hope they are still together and are having a wonderful and rewarding life together Most of the girls I dated resided in different school districts. A young lady, Neva Perguson, who I took to the Senior Prom. One of the funniest memories I have is on senior cut day six of us guys went to Immigrant Gap. It was in late spring, the sun was shining, and it was a beautiful warm day. We all took our shirts off while playing on the slopes in the snow. I got the worst sun/snow burn and so did a couple of other guys. It was so sunburnt so bad I couldn't participate in gym the next school day. I think the biggest honor I had in high school was when I was selected by the faculty as one of the top 50 seniors. I was probably number 50! Another honor was serving on the human relations council and battling the worms in the passage ways...(laughing here). I'm sure Peter Fong remembers that! The one thing I wish I would have done in high school is to have taken more college prep courses. That would would have prepared me for all the education I pursued after entering the military. I guess I was sort of out of the mainstream during those school years. As some would say not part of the clique or in crowd. Maybe it was my own personality that caused it. I have had a wonderful life so far. Lots of defeats and victories. That is what allows us to grow and mature. College For approximately a year and a half I attended technical training eight hours a day. The curriculum was electronic enginnering based. We took math classes that included calculus. I also completed many extension classes of Golden Gate Baptist Seminary including philosophy, ethics, religious studies, and humanities. To date I have aquired 122 college credits. d have focused my higher education towards a specific degree. Workplace I entered the Navy ten days after high school in 1970. My main job was to repair the avioncs systems on aircraft. As I advanced in rank my responsibilities grew. I have been an avionic shop supervisor (up to 56 people), a maintenance control supervisor scheduling the mainteneance on aircraft, a quality assurance supervisor reponsible for ensuring all the work is done properly, and a divison manager (up to 458 ppeople). I retired from the Navy late 1991. After retiring from the Navy I have worked as a NCOA counselor in the Bay Area, Sacramento, Yuba City, and Marysville for a while. Then I obtained a teaching position for a technical school teaching the curriculum for airframe and powerplant (A & P), FCC (GROL), and Radar licenses. I traveled all over the United States and to Germany. Later I worked as a truck driver all over the United States and Ontario Canada. I finally landed a job working for Raytheon Aerospace at McClellan AFB here in Sacramento working on the aircraft. When McClellan closed I transferred with the aircraft contract to work at Boeing Aerospace in San Antionio, TX. In October 2003 a degerative disease attacked my neck called Cervical Stenosis. Everything in my neck was choking my cervical chord to the point where you couldn't see the spinal fluid in x-rays or MRI. So I returned to Sacramento where I have family to pursue a medical correction. On January 12, 2005, I had a extremely successful neck fusion operation. They repaired four disks in my neck, c3-c6. My physical therapy went very well considering the extreme limited use I have of my arms. Many of the nerves in my neck never re-generated. Now, I am on total disability. My wife and I do plan to alternate between Sacramento and Cebu City, Philippines. We have family in both locales. Military I had an extraordinary Naval carrer. June of 1970 I entered boot camp for 12 weeks. I went to a technical school in Millington, TN, for almost a year and a half, eight hours a day, and burnt the midnight candle studying. My first squadron was VAQ-135 Detachment 2(The Black Ravens)which had three A-3 (Whale) aircraft with electronic jamming platforms and was located in Alameda, CA. During my assignment I was aboard the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier. We made a Meditteranean cruise and visited Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Palma. At the young age of 19 I was a shift supervisor for the avionics shop and had obtained the rank of E-5. After VAQ-135 decommissioned I transferred to our sister squadron VAQ-130 (the Sea Dragons), located in the next hanger over, and was in four of the detachments. During this tour of duty we were aboard the USS Oriskany and USS Ranger aircraft carriers. After VAQ 130 decommissioned I went to RVAW-110 detachment 5 located close to San Diego at Coronado, CA. The type aircraft was the E-1 (Willy Fudd). This type of squadron was responsible for airborne early warning. We were aboard the USS Hancock aircraft carrier and assisted with the evacuation of Saigon, South Vietnam. During this tour of duty I was the avionic shop supervisor. Responsible for both day and night shifts. After RVAW-110 decommmioned I was sent back to Alameda, CA., for my first tour of shore duty. This reserve training squadron was comprised of the A-3, A-4, F-4, S-2, and C-1 type aircraft with a compliment of about 30 active duty personnel. I was one of them. We were reponsible for the training of the A-3 pilots, navigators, and radar operators to be assigned to the fleet. We went aboard aircraft carriers as the mainteneance team for pilot aircraft carrier qualifications. I was the avionic shop supervisor and also a maintenance team leader aboard ship. The A-3 training program was transferred from Alameda to VAQ-33 in Norfolk, VA in 1978. I was suppose to be able to finish my tour of shore duty, but was sent on the sea duty detachments also. This squadron had the A-3, A-4, F-4, and EC-121 aircraft. Our primary job was to be the bad guys during flight training exercises. We had special electronic platforms. If someone asked me what my job was I would tell them I painted the white lines in parking lots. I reported back to sea duty as an aircrewman. Went to HM-16 located in Norfolk, VA. We had eight H-53 Sea Stallion Helicopters. Our primary job was airborne underwater mine sweeping. We also hauled a lot of cargo. I was promoted to E-6 and was the line (serviced and inspected the aircraft)supervisor, avioncs supervisor, and duty day maintenance control supervisor. This is the squadron that was tasked with providing the aircraft to get the Iranian hostages in 1980. We were aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Nimitz aircraft carriers. Visiting Nova Scotia, the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, Key West, and participated in U.S. and Canadian airshows. I must interject a very special friendship with a wonderful person by the name of Jim Annichiarico. I wish all navy people were as dedicated and devoted to duty as he was. I went on shore duty to training squadron HM-12. I was an instructor, facilitator, night shift maintenance control, avionic and quality assurance supervisor. I was selected by the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce as runner-up for Military Citizen of the Year Award. 1985 to 1989 I was assigned as USS Enterprise ship's company. I was the VAST shop supervisor; avionic branch, avionics division, and quality assurance manager. I was selected for E-7 and E-8. We visited Hawaii, the Phillipines, Singapore, Korea, Australia, Pakistan, and Kenya. My last two years I was the Officer in Charge of the Naval Aviation Engineering and Service Unit in Alameda, CA. I was in charge of 26 representatives of major aircraft manufacturing companies providing in depth mainteneance and training to the Pacific Fleet. I was awarded 33 ribbons and medals, and over 50 Letters of Commendation or Achievement. I am very proud of a successful 22 year career.
