Miriam's Story
College
I attended UC Santa Barbara from 1978 til 1981. I studied in Bordeaux, France for my junior year. I majored in French. Santa Barbara was a spectacular place to live for a few years! I'd live there again--such perfect weather!--but the real estate is pretty much out of my league, and Southern Cal politics and I don't see eye to eye! I've lived in Portland, OR the last ten years or so, where it's a better political fit but the weather truly sucks nine months out of the year. My partner and I are considering a move to a warmer climate, but she has a large extended family here, which is important to both of us (they've "adopted" me and shower us with love!!). However, we could always visit, I say. The rain affects my mood and, yes, my arthritis, and not in a good way! Writing and being in the mountains camping or doing nature hikes/walks are two activities I have always cherished. Reading literary fiction by American and French writers and listening to music both new and from way back in high school and college days...Expand for more
come in close behind. I'm trying to make time for learning to be a better photographer of nature and of people. And I have loved painting with oils, but it's been a while, and I miss that groove I used to get into when I painted for hours on end in studio classes. I went through years of depression when I stopped doing most of these things out of a lack of interest. I am grateful to feel myself again, to feel animated and full of joy much of the time, and to have found my life partner after my first marriage proved to be a crushing disappointment. Now belly laughs are part of my daily life, along with the little ups and downs that happen in all our lives. Yes, it's a cliche, but laughter really does have remarkable healing power! Working on my PhD entailed long solo hours and way too much seriousness!!! -- but I did complete the degree, and I loved my field (comparative literature). Last year I got a cancer diagnosis, but I'm doing well and enjoying life. I am working on a memoir, and that's an amazing experience, I find.
