Missy's Story
I got my BS in Biology from a small Catholic college in Indiana. Life in the midwest, I quickly found out, was much different than the east coast, but I grew to like it. After graduation, though, I did move back and have not missed the -20 winters or the 150 degree humid summers!! I was working as the Inorganic Laboratory Manager for a chemical standards firm here in RI. In February 2006, after six and a half years, I left the company to reevaluate my personal and career goals. Since then I worked as a QC Analyst for Alexion Pharmaceuticals (Smithfield, RI). Alexion was granted FDA approval in March 2007 for Soliris, a drug for the treatment of a rare blood disorder, affecting roughly 10,000 people worldwide. I left Alexion in December 2014 due to a serious illness, and have yet to return to the workforce. ...Expand for more
I also went to Johnson and Wales and completed culinary school, graduating in 2016 with a degree in baking and pastry. Again, due to the illness, I have not been able to get my first job in the field. "Someday" I keep telling myself LOL
While in college I began writing a book, which will hopefully be done before I forget how to write! When the weather permits I try to play as much tennis as I can. I go to the gym and also swim everyday -it is not only a wonderful exercise, but my greatest stress reliever. In July 2005, I did my first open water swim in the annual Save the Bay Swim, a 1.7 mile trek across Narragansett Bay from Newport to Jamestown. Completing the swim has been, by far, THE greatest personal accomplishment of my life. Perhaps this is the beginning of my training for a tri-athalon? Hmmm
