Mitch's Story

Life _Went to 3 grade schools in two states; 2 junior high schools same state; and 2 high schools in two states. _Used to do gymnastics,(standing back flips),wrestled and played trumpet, (later the drums in my last year of high school, and the year following high school). _6 1/2 yrs Army aviation,(Oct of 1977-Apr of 1984), mechanic/crewchief/Flight Engineer on CH-47 Chinook helicopters. _Basics at Ft Bliss / El Paso, Texas; _4 MONTHS AIT School at Ft Eustis / Norfolk/Newport News, Virginia; _3.5 yrs at Ft Campbell, Kentucky-'Bravo' Company, 159th Aviation Battalion; _1.5 yrs (two winters) Ft. Wainwright / Fairbanks, Alaska-242nd Company-"Sugar Bears"-High Altitude Rescue Team(HART); _1 (last) year at Ft Carson / Colorado Springs, Colorado. _After I got out of the Army, (among other things) I did a short stint in acting, did a few commercials in Denver during the mid-80's, (my goal was to become a stunt man). _In 1988-(when I turned 30)-I decided to get back into aviation maintenance. Got my A&P license-(Airframe and Powerplant)- and in 89 moved from Denver to Oregon where I've been ever since, working on helicopters and small fixed wing airplanes until 2001. I'm now a corporate jet and meda-vac/life-flight jet/turbo-prop mechanic in Oregon, (since Sep 2001). _ I've worked at the same airport, -between two different companies-, since the summer of 1994, (Minus one year_ 2000-2001). _Was in a committed relationship with a wonderful woman for the last 24 years. I've never had children of my own, . . . however, she has 3 daughters, (now grown adults), and 6 g-kids, translation: I'm an adopted grandpa; they all call me 'Poppy'. She passed away from cancer Apr 2017, I stopped smoking cigarettes cold turkey at the same time. Fear is one hell'uva motivator. As of this edit it is Feb 2021, still live int he same house still work the same job, just live alone. _I've lived in Wyoming, Colorado, Tennessee, Alaska, and Oregon; I've worked in all those states except Wyoming; additionally I've spent weeks or even months working in Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington, (as a field mechanic on helicopters fighting wild-fires and heli-logging)., So yeah, some might say I've been around the block. *NOTE: I've yet to see New England, (my goal is during the Fall); or leave the USA-(Alaska doesn't count in my opinion). School History _Ken Caryl Jr. High was some of my fondest memories from my teen years. Running around with Mark Bondi, Jim McCready, Joan and Lori Nelson, ...Expand for more
Kathy Therian, Chris Brown, Tom Stone, Pete Grant, Steve Burnett, Sue Vigil, Billy Vail, Brian Cross, . . . just some of the old gang from Columbine Hills and Columbine Knolls I hung out with. _The parties up in Deer Creek Canyon, throwing snowballs at cars and hitching rides on the bumpers of cars during winter, spending the weekend up at Red Rocks-(back when it wasn't so controlled), sneaking out to meet girls, or "get a buzz" in the field in front of my house behind the 7-11 store, off S. Platte Canyon Rd. and Depew St. (which by the way is now all houses-the spot I lost my virginity is now somebody's driveway or living room, LOL); all I remember fondly. _I lived down in Columbine Hills, while alot of the guys I ran around with lived up in the Columbine Knolls neighborhood. _Columbine High School was still under construction when I went there briefly; the landscaping was still in progress, parking lots still being paved, grass-seeding and sod being laid, no hot lunches, no gymnasium. Chatfield Damm was also still under construction. Then my parents divorced (I was 16) and I spent the last two years (75-76) and graduated from, high school in Gordon, Nebraska, (Junior and Senior year), up in the north-west pan-handle of Nebraska, just south of the Nebraska/South Dakota state line-south of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Work History-(NOT in chronological order)-I've held a full or part-time job, of one kind or another, since I was 15, in 1973: I've bailed hay_drove a tractor pulling a 43' wide hay rake_fixed fence_branded cattle_milked cows; bag-boy/carryout_grocery delivery_assist manager of produce section in a supermarket; delivered newspapers in high rise buildings Down Town Denver just south of the Capitol; planted trees/shrubs and landscaped for a tree nursery; US Army soldier-6.5 years-Helicopter Crew Chief/Flight Engineer/mechanic; electrician apprentice_construction; drove a dump truck_bobcat-front-end-loader_installed underground sprinkler systems; acting/commercials; bouncer_doorman_bartender_assist-manager of strip-bar; bartender in several bars/taverns; delivered/picked up rental cars_car repo; high-security-document-storage warehouse; apartment assist-manager; janitor in high rise building; helicopter mechanic on helicopter doing heli-logging, mechanic/fuel tender on helicopter leased to Gov. -(Bureau of Indian Affairs-BIA/ Bureau of Land Management-BLM) for wild fire fighting; currently mechanic on corporate_private_charter_Life-flight jets for the last 9 years.
