Mitchell's Story

Life Hello everyone! I still live in Saint Paul, am single and have no children. I graduated from St. Paul Central in 1983. I had a bout with non-hodgkins-lymphoma(cancer) from December of 1995-June 1996. It almost took my life but I got through it. School While in high school at St. Paul Central the teachers who inspired me were Dan Brink, Floyd Smaller, Bruce Robb and Greta Michaels. Mr. Smaller kept me on the 'B squad boys basketball team even though I wasn't that good. That led me to playing varsity for Mr. Brink, who at the time ran one of the top high school boys basketball progams in Minnesota. Mr. Robb inspired me to become a teacher. Ms. Michaels taught creative writing. It was a class I didn't want to take but had to beacuse I didn't want a study hall. She inspired me and discovered my natural abilitly to write. She encouraged me to take up journalism in college. When I graduated from college (Central State University 1987) with a Bachelors Degree in Communications/Journalism Mr. Smaller, Mr. Brink and Mr. Robb helped jumpstart my career. Coach Brink and Coach Smaller opened their doors to me when I started my career as a prep sports writer and photographer. They both gave me access to the athletic program and allowed me to write stories about their teams. Mr. Robb inspired me to get my Masters Degree in Education and History (University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and become a teacher. Because of Mr. Smaller, Mr Robb and Mr. Brink and Ms. Michaels I am doing everything I wanted to do and I couldn't be happier. My funnest high school memories were hanging out with my crew, Craig Henderson, Ricky Davis, Shawn Watson, Derrill Pattain and Terrill Pattain. We had the best of times and we always had fun. I also remember Roy Griffin. Roy was my best friend during junior high school. We drifted apart once we got to high school but he was the one who talked me into going out for basketball when I was scared. I made th...Expand for more
e team and he didn't. He was much better than me but he didn't sulk. He supported me and came to all my games. We were best friends until his untimely death in 1995. I really miss him. College My college days at Central State University were the greatest. There were my home boys Craig Guidry, Kylon Payne and Will Lockett. There was Lorna Service, Kim Allen and Gladys "Scooby" Tyson in "the back." My boys Mark Perkins and Kurt Atkins in the apartments. My roomates Kevin Moxely (sophomore & junior year) and Grady Davis (senior year). My communication lab pals Tonya Mundy and Tracy Jefferson. My main man "Conrad Cosey"(rest in peace brotha). You were the best. The best female friend I ever had in Lori Stirckland and of course my buds for life---Donnie Evege and Troy Franklin. Can't forget my man Derrick Russell (Lefty) and my man Clyde Smith. I also remember my boy Greg Jones from Hamilton, Demtrius Jenkins from Cincy, Kenneth Jackson from Dayton, LeRoy Luckie from Dayton and my girl Vernida Singleton from DC. Andrea Giles from Cincy is another friend I'll never forget. Anthony Quinn from Toledo was a good friend of mine all through college. I'll never forget that. Anthony Martin from Zanesville is one person I can't forget because he was the first person I met when I came to CSU. And of course my man Isaac Crews. Isaac even lived in Minnesota a few years and he was always there for me when I needed him. He moved back to Ohio a few years back but I'll never forget his friendship while at CSU and when he lived in St. Paul. I can say that those were some of the best days of my life. If I forgot anyone please contact a brotha and let me know. I would love to hear from you. Employment I teach social studies and journalism at Johnson High School in St. Paul and am a prep sports photographer and columnist for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.
