Monica's Story

What about me would surprise everyone at my high school reunion? I would be surprised if any of you remembered me! The teacher I'd love to see again? I only remember Mr. Greer and Mr. Ramsey. The wildest thing that I ever did in school? You all would have to tell me, I don't know. I'm sorry. What happened to my first crush...well, I believe that my first crush was actually in college and I married him. We've been married now for 35 years (plus 8 months). He graduated, became a fighter pilot in the Air Force (F-15's), retired, and is now doing what he did when he retired, flying a desk in Plans and Programs at Ramstein AB in Germany. How do I hope old friends remember me? Well, I guess fondly. I can really only go by how my current friends think of me and that is that I'm whacky and fun, gullable and naive in so many ways, don't understand humor or sarcasm at all, and I am pretty perky morning, noon, or night. They all call me an alien dropped off by a mother ship in the New Mexico desert and raised under a rock. Eh...close enough. To be truly happy I would be with my friends and family, at home watching the super bowl with my closest compadres, on my dock with my kids enjoying the air show at Langley, at my mom-in-law’s eating pizza and playing board games with my nieces and nephews.. What has been my biggest surprise? How much my faith would influence my adult life. Oh and that I love being involved in social justice/social action! One do-over...what would I redo? Well, that's a loaded question. If I re-did ANYTHING over, I wouldn't be the person I am now in my life, with the husband I have and the two most spectacular kids in the whole world. I don't think I'd redo anything at all. The weirdest job I've ever had...well, that had to be at the Men's Mart in Las Cruces when I was in my early twenties. The old men who ran the place always complained that they had to pay me so much because of minimum wage, that I worked to slowly, and that I was untrainable. They fired me after like two weeks! Where have I lived? Wow. Well, we married December 19, 1982 and immediately moved to Virginia for six months where we lived with my in-laws. The off to Wichita Falls, Tx for ENJPT (flight training). There for a year then off to Cocoa Beach for three months (FAC school) and then to Shaw AFB, SC for three years. Then Phoenix for F-15 RTU for about six months and then Eglin AFB in Fl. for almost four years...Expand for more
. After Desert Shield/Storm we headed off to Holloman (you ALL should know where that is) for four years and then to Langley AFB in Va where we have been since 1997. He's retired now so I don't imagine we'll be moving much more anytime soon. ** UPDATE: we moved to Ramstein Germany in March 2018! Well, that's all of the story ideas. Can't really tell you anything more. I have been a professional volutneer for all of my husband’s military career. I finally got my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Regent University. I am hugely involved in the United Methodist church and United Methodist Women (well, was...no UMC near us at Ramstein so we attend chapel on base and I enjoy Protestant Women of the Chapel). I've had an exciting life. I've met many people. I've loved absolutely every place that we've lived. I waited eight years to have children and my baby is now 25! My mom died of breast cancer 16 years ago and my sister is now through with her treatments for breast cancer and 12 years cancer free. I still play the flute, mostly only at church but there is a community band I will rejoin in Hampton when we return. I like where I am in my life. UPDATE: June 2015 Well, I'm still involved in the Officer's Spouses Club where I play MahJongg and bowl. This year I will be the newsletter editor. I'm a Conference Officer the the Virginia Conference United Methodist Women, Social Action Mission Team Coordinator and am highly involved in educating the ladies in all thing Human Traffickng. I'm Lay Leader at my home church, still involved in all the choirs and am a Stephen Leader as well as trained in Emotional/Spiritual Care for disaster response teams. The biggest news is that I'm no longer in therapy and I have recovered some of my lost memories, yay! I never did get my Master's degree...still call myself a "professional volunteer" and very grateful that I can be. I have come into my own and like who I have become...I'm still crazy and my friends still accuse me of being an alien (my kids have picked up that mantra as well). I have fun! And now, as of yesterday, I am 55 years old. Honestly, when I was in high school and college at NMSU I never believed I'd live to 30 let alone 55. I think I have aged well but that's me. I no longer fight my grey hair, which has been greying since I was 22. It's its naturally curly, hugely curly, salt and pepper thing that it is. Life is sweet and I get to share it each day with amazing folks. Thanks be to God.
