Monique's Story

After graduation from Madonna, I went to BCC and must have changed my major like 5 times. I ended up getting my degree in Liberal Arts (which everyone knows means "UNDECIDED"). I then decided to go to Nova Southeastern to get my Bachelor's Degree in Education (with the help and encouragement from my friend Melissa Canavan, now Schrack, as she was doing the same at St Thomas). I ended up getting my degree and graduating on the Dean's List. So, I was intellgent...like the nuns at Madonna used to tell my mother at Open House...."if she would just stop being a social butterfly, she has the potential to be extremely intelligent...if she would just apply herself !!"). Okay sisters.....you were right !! I ended up teaching elementary school for about 10 years, and decided I wanted to become a firefighter. So, I attended EMT school at BCC while still teaching. In January of 2003, I entered Broward Fire Academy. It was at this point that I started dating my wonderful husband Steve. He was so supportive of me and truly was my source of strength...along with my brothers. I graduated from the academy in March and began Paramedic school in August. With one semester of Paramedic school to go, the Broward County School Board told me I had to go back to the classroom (as my leave of absence was cut short). So, I got a job teaching at Sawgrass Elementary for one month when the City of Sunrise hired me as a firefighter and I finally left the classroom in 2004. FINALLY...even though I still renew my certificate. Hey, you never know when you might need it !! Upon starting my career with the city, my husband Steve proposed to me...on a dock, at sunset, in Islamorada, Keys. What a romantic...and sooo appropriate, as we both LOVE Islamorada!! we got married a year later in 2005, one week after Hurricane Wilma. We almost didn't get married because of that hurricane. We got our electricity 3 days before our wedding, our bridal party had trouble getting into town, and our rerception was moved to another location because the original place had no electricity. Imagine....a whole year of planning a wedding and only having 3 days to REDO the WHOLE thing. So much for massages and golf the week before !!! It turned out to be an awesome wedding...almost like being at a nightclub..as EVERYONE was wasted and danicng all night...because at that time, EVERYONE needed a party. Alot of my guests lost their roofs, their cars, their homes. At the end of the night, no one wanted to leave. I could totally understand why. Six weeks later, I was pregnant (and didn't even know it). Doctors had told me in the past that I wasn't able to have children, and if I could it would be very difficult if at all possible. Well, I guess man says one thing and GOD says another. I had an awesome pregnancy for being 38 years old and considered "high risk". My pregnancy was "textbook" as the Obstetrician and Specialist said. While I was pregnant, my husband Steve entered the Coral Springs Fire Academy and graduated in July. I delivered Brock Michael on Sept. 2 at 3:58 in the morning, after only a 7 hour labor and no drugs. Yep, an all natural labor...and it was soooo wonderful !! ( I am being sarcastic !!!) It was something I wanted but very difficult to do. If any of you ha...Expand for more
ve children, then you know something about the school year deadline for entering your child into school, right?? Well, if not, I will tell you. The deadline is Sept 1. My son missed the deadline by 3 hours and 58 minutes...which means that when he is ready to enter preschool at 3, he will have to wait a whole year because on Sept 1 he will technically only be 2 years old. UGH !!! I know, I know.....the guys all say that it is better to have your son be the oldest and biggest in the class than the youngest. But I just wanted that option. Okay...I am done ranting...moving on. After Brock was born, I took off and went back to work three months later to the day. My husband got hired at Palm Beach County Fire Rescue one month after Brock turned one. We were so blessed by God, because at that time the economy started to do poorly and everyone's budgets were being cut, and NO departments were hiring (in fact, some wanted to let go people). For Steve being hired as and EMT for one of the BEST departments in the state...THAT was God's doing. As you can tell...my faith in God from Madonna Academy, my church, and my family HAS and ALWAYS will be strong. In December, I took the Driver Operator class, and then the promotional exam in April. I scored in the top position and was promoted in May. I absolutely LOVE my job !! I am the 4th girl on my department to become a Driver. It's an awesome job with alot of responsibilty getting to the calls and getting the guys WATER. last year, my husband and I went to Las Vegas and came back PREGNANT !! So Brianna Grace was born in October. She is truly an angel and all she does is smile !! I have been a Driver for 3 years now, and completed all my courses to become a Fire Inspector. If all goes well, I will be transferring into the Fire Life Safety Division of my department by the beginning of the summer. Boo Hoo..no more shift schedule for me...but my children will have Mom at home every night. So...life has been good, or should I say great !!! I truly value my OLD friendships, and always welcome new ones. Friends and family are a MAJOR part of our life. There isn't a weekend that goes by that we aren't getting together with family or friends. We try to surround ourselves with positive people and we try to laugh as much as possible...very easy to do with the help of my Captain....Captain Morgan, that is. Hee hee. We try to get to The Round Up every once in a while (where my husband and I met....YES, a BAR...I know, I know...come on...I was single for a long time....where else is there to go besides church to meet a guy ??...hee hee). I think this website is awesome as I have been able to reconnect with old friends. It also lets me read up on the girls that made my life a living hell at Madonna...and now snicker a little. Just kidding !! I hope to one day become friendly with girls that I didn't like or that didn't like me...I don't hold grudges (takes too much energy) and I try to forgive and forget. I hope that whoever reads this...that God continues to bless you in your life, to keep you in the palm of His hand if you are having troubles, and to guide you in all your life choices. Please don't be a stranger...if you feel like e-mailing...PLEASE DO !! I look forward to hearing from you !!
