Morris Alonzo's Story
My brother Nicky and I were among the very first students to attend the brand new Courtis Elementary School in 1966. I was in kindergarten. My teacher's name was Mrs. Getry. rts of instruments. We had an awesome physical fitness program. The teachers specialized in various subjects. So, all students learned from those teachers who were the best in their field. We had science fairs, after school recreation and the most interesting field trips. The PTA was huge and very active. We all got an excellent education back then. It is really interesting to compare what we had then to what we have now.
I was in Detroit in July of this year and found the old school boarded up and the grounds completely overgrown with weeds. It was a very sad sight to find the great institution in such disrepair.
