Morris's Story

Life I got off to a bad start... as a kid I didn't seem to live up to my family's expectations, the schools expectations, no one's expectations... not even my own. After getting thrown out of La Sierra on my Dad's birthday in 1961 (I think it was) and running amuck for a while I tried to escape into the navy which didn't work either. They told me I was dumber than I already thought I was and threw me out for being undesirable. So I went back to work at the Courier and then switched over to the Carmichael Printing Co for a couple years... and then I moved to S.F. in an effort to deal with my drinking and try get another start on things with a better job. Needless to say geographical changes don’t usually help with drinking situations because where ever one goes, not only is there alcohol, but they take the problem (themselves) with them. When I got tired of seeing everything there was to see in the City, I started buying books and hiding out with them in my apartment, the park or the beach. Wasn’t long before I fell in with the flower children and psychedelics And thought I’d found the answer to my problem only to wakeup a few years later to realize that it was the same problem over again… just different scenery. But then in a sense, maybe it was the solution as it drew me to the attention of the authorities who basically rescued me from myself before I could do what I seen some of those folks do, (turn themselves into permanent members of the vegetable kingdom), by locking my rear up for my behavior. In there they gave me a series of tests and showed me that I wasn't as dumb as I thought. I couldn’...Expand for more
t believe I had those scores, and it motivated me to continue with school. I had spent nearly 3 yrs at La Sierra and barely had enough credits to finish my freshman year (30) so I needed 150 credits to get my diploma. Then I took a couple of courses on bookkeeping and basic accounting along with courses on business law and economics. After I got out of there, I took up studying sociology and human behavior. I worked as a counselor for the El Dorado Council on Alcoholism for a couple of years and with the passing of prop 13, went into the substance abuse treatment biz and spent 20 yrs + operating drug treatment facilities. Over those years, about 2,000 folks started their recovery from addiction sleeping under my roof and I had the pleasure of seeing many of them turn their lives around and many are still doing very well. I feel it was an honor for God to have let me play a part in their lives. Have you ever thrown a pebble in a still pond? Today, I live in the traffic congestion along I-80 called Fairfield and I sell literature to a special interest group for a living. I enjoy movies, TV, visiting with friends, cooking, reading, doing volunteer work for my favorite special interest group, sitting in the yard on a hot day with a water hose doing battle with the neighbors’ kids and sometimes just taking a long drive. Most folks call me ‘Mo’ today instead of Morris. I picked that up from a bowling sheet in the late 70s. Though I don’t bowl much anymore due to a disk problem in my neck. I was somewhat fanatical about it for a number of years. There was one league that I bowled on for over 20 years.
