Morris's Story

In 1983 I was attending JJC, majoring in manufacturing. I was so disillusioned with the establishment that I had to leave. I dropped out of JJC and joined the Navy. I realized too late, much to my dismay, that I had just dug a deeper hole into conformity. All in all it was a pretty good career. In 1988, when stationed at the Philly Naval base, I got married and became a father in 1989 to a beautiful girl. I loved being married then but it didn't work out. After 7 years in the Navy I got out and we moved to NY, after 2 years of marriage we divorced. I stayed in NY because I wanted to be around my daughter. Having been a Navy machinist I found work easily and did so for 11 years. Not one to sit still, and always interested in learning new things, I pursued an interest in gunsmithing and then became a certified NRA pistol instructor. After 11 years of factory work, I got tired of all the layoffs and union strikes, then I went back to school in 1999, this time I loved college. Got my A.A. in Social Sciences, graduated Phi Theta Kappa. I attended University at Buffalo for my B.A. in Sociology/Criminology, graduated with honors, Alpha Kappa Delta. Made a career change at 37, had several different jobs, worked with the mentally and physically disabled, troubled youth, gangs and then male addicts. After that I started teaching; taught Sociology in the community college that I attended, taught computer use & anger management counseling in the county jail, and I loved it. Continued my education by getting my Master's in Criminal Ju...Expand for more
stice; graduated with honors, Alpha Phi Sigma and wrote an award-winning thesis titled "The Death Penalty as Applied to Corporate Crime," which I presented in both Albany, NY and at the professional conference of Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Toronto, Canada.. While pursuing my Master's at Buffalo State College I was asked to teach undergraduate students. I published twice while attending graduate school, I taught in higher ed. for about 7 years, became jaded with academia and left. I then decided to put my former machining skills to good use and began making jewelry along along with other crafts. I've always considered myself a pro-Marxist and an anti-capitalist, but further research as an academic led me to Adam Smith (The so-called Father of modern capitalism. Not so!); Smith was a big influence on Karl Marx, and after reading Smith's opus "The Wealth of Nations," it became apparent that Smith, like Marx, was a staunch supporter of labor, which fit right into my wheelhouse as a pro-labor supporter. Nowadays I consider myself a supporter of Smithian-style capitalism; I.e., one who believes in capitalism, but also maintaining Smith's idea that capitalists have an obligation to their laborers, not the other way around. My daughter is a beautiful grown woman now and living in upstate NY, she is engaged to be married and we get to see each other at least once a year. I live with my girlfriend of 29 years in a 4 bedroom Cape Cod on ninety acres of beautiful, secluded timber land in western NY. Thanks for stopping by! 😀
