Muriel's Story

After leaving the safe and secure world of Carter High School, cheerleading and my parents home, I entered college at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and majored in Speech Arts Communications. I married my high school sweetheart, Searcy Redd, III, during the fall semester of my freshman year in college. After finishing with a BFA degree in May of 1977, I thought you were supposed to keep going to college, so I entered grad school at SMU and earned a Masters in Liberal Arts. Before I earned my masters, I divorced Searcy, and remarried him again and to the second union, three wonderful children were born (two boys and a girl). Searcy, unfortunately passed away when the oldest was six years old and the youngest was three. After raising three children alone for the last 15 years, I truely love and appreciate parenthood(even when you play both the role of mother and father). I did all the parent stuff like PTA Executive Board, parent volunteer, football, basketball, volleyball, track and all the sleepovers and birthday parties. However, one of the brighest spots of single parenting is the reward of how great the children develop. The oldest, Searcy Redd,IV is currently teaching high school in Dallas like me, and the two youngest are in college. I am a very involved teacher at my ...Expand for more
high school and currently serve as Speech & Debate coach,in addition to the many other extra activities that I coordinate or assist with. I have been a life long long member of St.Paul United Methodist Church in the Arts District where I currently hold a position on the Church Council as the Arts Ministry Chairperson. I also serve with various other ministries at churchand have chaired some special events,in addition to running a summer performing arts camp for inner city youth children. I just returned to graduate school again to work on additional certifications. With all that I do and have accomplished in my life, there are still times that I feel like "I've only just begun." In May of 2008, my oldest Searcy Redd, IV graduated from UNT and in August of 2011, my daughter Marla, finished UNT and four months later in December I completed my second masters in Library Science. Both of the UNT grads are employed by DISD. Currently, by day I am a high school librarian and on Friday nights, I swap capes and announce high school football games. I have also started a third masters in Sports Administration. For those of you that remember me, I always loved sports and wrote for the Carter HS newspaper. We are all waiting on my last child, to finish college. Will keep you posted:-)
