Murry's Story

Life well i have three grown kids one son two daughters, I have an MBA and I am studying for my Doctorate, i have worked all over the world, i have had many different careers, i enjoy traveling and so far have traveled to all but two states in us, i will add those some day, i married my high school sweet heart 51 years ago and we are still sweet hearts today ( Diane Matlock Plunk my wife passed away 01/08/2022). Murry K. Plunk History While in the US Army in 1972 I was sent to Germany and stationed at Baum-holder Germany in the Alps Mountains. I arrived in mid January during a snow storm. There was over 10 inches of snow on the ground at that time and the temperatures were cold enough to freeze a bottle of beer in seven minutes. My first week end there I went for a walk during one evening to seek a pay phone where I could call home and let my wife know I was safely there. I followed the road headed for the closest civilian town which was down the mountain. It had turned dark as I walked and I was startled by a car coming around the winding road. I had to jump clear to keep from getting hit. The drivers never saw me or did not stop. Where I jumped there was no shoulder to land on, there was only a steep cliff. I fell over sixty feet straight down. During the fall I tried to catch myself on the side of the mountain and only my left leg caught hold while the rest of me fell on. I broke my leg and ankle at that time plus tearing apart all the tendons and ligaments in my left leg. That rolled me into a ball and I hit the bottom of the cliff on my left shoulder breaking it. I lay at the bottom of the cliff for a few minutes calling for help but there was no one there. I stood up and tried to walk but my left leg was damaged to bad to use. I started crawling back to my base using my broken shoulder to get help. I crawled for over four hours back to the post housing area. The first house I knocked on the door and was told to go away. I crawled to another house and there I realized I needed help no matter what. I made the decision to kick down the door instead of knocking. So with my good foot I kicked the entire door down with one massive kick. The door I kicked in belonged to the head doctor of the medical clinic on my post. He was more than a little mad at me so he called the Military police on me. While he was doing that I took off my sho...Expand for more
e on my right foot. My foot immediately swelled up like a balloon. The Doctors wife saw my foot swell and took the phone and called the aid station asking for help. I was loaded on an ambulance when the MP's arrived. I was given morphine keeping me unconscious for a month while the hospital where I had been transferred to waited for my swelling to go down low enough they could operate on my leg. The first surgery repaired my broken ankle installing a cellulose bone screw to hold a section of the ankle joint together. A month later the doctors realized they had missed repairing all the tendon damage so I was operated on a second time to make those repairs. The doctors also never made any effort to repair my broken shoulder which healed on its own. I was retired from the military after that with a patella tendon brace on my left leg. That brace hurt my knee as much as walking on my bad ankle. When I left the service I found an orthopedic surgeon who helped me get out of the brace giving me cortisone shots in the ankle and taking anti-inflammatory drugs. Over the years that followed I walked and worked as long as I could using my bad ankle then began using an electric wheel chair. In 2010 My doctor Dr. Munford at Harris Southwest in Fort Worth operated on my ankle removing large bone spurs and cleaning up the joint. After the surgery my ankle felt great for a month. During physical therapy something felt like it broke loose in my ankle and since then I have been having sever ankle pain and leg pain again. I am back to using the wheel chair when I walk a lot but I still walk as much as possible. Now if you have read all this I am doing fine I am retired going back to college working on my Doctorate, yes doctorate in business I plan to teach college part time enjoy life and pretty much do what ever I want for now until when ever. Well teaching college was not for me I tried it for a short while and nope. I traveled with my wife all over the US and some foreign nations, until she got sick with an inherited disease. That was worse for me than crawling around in the snow for a few hours. After four years of fighting she passed away surrounded by her family and friends here at home. So now I am a widower, single again after 51 years. To our friends who knew Diane and me we have lost a real treasure in her. I will miss her always. Murry
