Nadine's Story

Life Andrew and I got married September 17, 2006. It was a perfect day, literally. The entire week it had been cold and rainy, but the Sunday of our wedding dawned warm and sunny. We moved to Ottawa just a month after that, and are busy getting our new house just so - as any perfectionist Virgo pair might. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion in ten months or so! School Mr. Cormier was hands-down the best teacher at Carrefour. Funny but firm, he took no crap from anyone and had such high standards that you wanted to raise your own. When I first started at Carrefour in grade 10, my English mark was 55 through sheer laziness. I went up to a 90 by the time I graduated. It was as if he knew, even though he had never met me, that I could do better and what on earth was the matter with me that I wasn't trying? Cheers, Mr. Cormier. [N.B. Mme. Délanée also has a special place in my heart. What was it, 63 sunflowers on her car by the time we graduated?] College Best teacher -- Dr. Vincent Tobin (or Vladimir Mihailovich, if he was on his way back to Russia). Taught me about mythology, taught me ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian. Looked like Santa Claus, but don't ever let him hear you say it. Fondness for vodka and the words "signification" and "facetious". Spoke 21 languages, brilliant man. I improved on my Spanish for another two years (for a total of four years of study), and proceeded to forget salient details of grammar and conjugation until Andrew and I wen...Expand for more
t on an expedition to Cancún in August 2004. And although Dr. Tobin tried his best to hammer Ancient Greek and Egyptian into our brains, all I remember is "Ho bios estin duros - Life is hard [greek]" and "Ren-i Nadine - My name is Nadine [egyptian]". I've been thinking about going back to school to get a full bachelor's degree, as I did a three-year program that allowed me to graduate in 2000. Naturally, Library Science is a selling point for me. :) Workplace After high school I focused on my language studies at SMU, and got a job at the Halifax Regional Library after my second year, moving on to three different positions at three different branches (Spring Garden, Alderney Gate, and Cole Harbour). I learned that I hate to exercise but if exercise is part of my job then that's okay, because then I have to do it. A paycheck is a great motivator. After several years of long-distance love with Andrew, we took the plunge and moved to Toronto together. I flipped through the Yellow Pages and got a job 10 days after my arrival at the only French bookstore in Toronto, the Librairie Champlain. Unfortunately, my stint there was brief due to financial issues the owners had, and I was let go after three months. I've been working in the Shoppers Drug Mart customer service call centre for the past 2 years now. It has taught me that I can still be surprised at the things people will tell a complete stranger, and that you should always check to make sure that your mute button works.
