Nancy's Story

Life This isn't really enough room for a life bio, but here goes: Joined the Navy after I graduated. Went to Boot Camp in Orlando, then tech school in Pensacola where I became a Cryptologic Technician - Communications (fancy name for what we now know as a network controller). My first duty station was Guantanamo Bay - I got my learners permit and promptly rolled my car - so they took my permit away. Next assignment was Kami Seya, Japan (about 45 minutes from Tokyo). Excellent duty station - hooked back up with many friends, climbed Mt Fuji, and did general sightseeing. Transferred to Rota, Spain. Met my husband-to-be (though I thought he was a bit too much of a wiseacre for my tastes. That took nearly the whole first year to get over). I was one of the early females allowed sea duty on a combatant ship - went on the 6th Fleet flagship to support the Marines of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Forces to Beirut. Franky (that's My Darling) was on the carrier America, and we got to know each other writing letters. So by the time I left Spain, we were engaged. He went to Homestead and I went to Key West. Which sounds close, but anyone who's ever driven the Key Highway knows that the 120 miles between the mainland and Key West is a 3-hour endurance ride with only one passing zone. Franky got tired of driving to visit me all the time, and insisted I get the stupid drivers license, which I hadn’t needed since I just rode my bike all the time. So we were married in NOV84, and I got the license a little after that. It was nice to come to work dry when it was raining. Not too many big events in the Navy career in Key West (well, what did you expect??!!) but I did qualify as an Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. I convinced the Navy to short-tour me, so after my minimum tour I transferred up to Homestead and we finally had a house together. (SIDE NOTE: I ran into Pat Griffin at a restaurant there - how wild is that??!! He was a helicopter pilot at the time - I...Expand for more
want to say in the Air Force). We transferred from Homestead back to Japan - I was supposed to get flight crew, but they changed my orders the day before I left. I was very disappointed, as I really wanted to be an airborne cryptologist. But... ended up back at Kami Seya and had a great 3 years there. I went to the Gulf for Desert Shield and Desert Storm, made Chief Petty Officer (though not the highest rank, this is the most meaningful promotion in the life of an enlisted Sailor), and climbed Fuji again. Tour ended abruptly when Franky suffered an aneurysm while attending a school back here in Maryland - thankfully they had him medevac’ed and in surgery in under an hour, so he's recovered fully. But the Navy terminated our overseas tour and assigned us to Ft Meade in Maryland. I taught cryptologic communications courses here from 91-96, transferred to Turkey for a year and a half (now THAT was a great tour!!) and came back to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Suitland, MD. The Navy was still concerned about Franky and overseas military hospitals, so my time in Turkey was unaccompanied. Bummer. I retired from the Navy in 1999, and went to work as a Program Manager at Computer Sciences Corporation, supporting the Defense Department. I didn't like not having control of what I did, so I quit CSC to become a Department of Defense civilian instead. I do love the work, though it keeps me exceptionally busy. At home, I’m pretty busy too. I am an Advisor for a High Adventure Teen Girl Scout troop, a truly rewarding and fun thing to do. I have a few part-time endeavors – Avon and Longaberger consultant. I am also a travel agent – this is new, but it fits my lifestyle as I can set up my own travel! I used to be quite active in co-ed softball, but I have no time anymore. I try to spend as much time as I can with Franky. My quiet time, when I get it, is spent reading. I have one cat, Motown. She’s 19, and on her own since we lost her sister Posey last year.
