Nancy's Story

Greetings to all of the Pilots of 1974! Haven't seen most of you since the 10-year reunion but hope to attend the 50-year in 2024. After graduating from Ohio Northern University in 1978 with a degree in Elementary Education, I moved out west to Scottsdale, Arizona. I earned a Master of Arts degree in Special Education from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, in 1984 and a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 1995 from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. I taught elementary and special education in Phoenix-area public schools for 20 years before working as an educational consultant and licensed curriculum auditor (four years each) where I traveled across the country assisting underperforming schools in improving standardized achievement scores in locales such as the Bronx, New York, Compton, California, New Orleans, Louisiana, Baltimore, Maryland, and the rural areas of Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Next, I worked ten years as a professor in the College of Education at Northern Arizona University teaching undergraduate and graduate level education courses at the satellite locations of Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. After specializing in assessment and evaluation, I have worked as a Director of Assessment at two medical colleges (Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Midwestern University's College of Veterinary Medicine). Through mutual friends, I met my husband, Scott Stackhouse, in 2006. We married in 2009 and will celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary this year! Scott grew up in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from Arizona Sta...Expand for more
te University with a degree in Business. He works for a commercial landscaping company here in the Phoenix area as a landscape designer and account manager. He is a big sports fan of the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Avalanche! In 2018, I retired early at age 62 to take care of my step-Mom, Barb Duke, who was in long-term care in Bradenton, Florida, until her passing in late 2018. Scott and I had also taken care of my Dad, Frank Duke, in Bradenton from 2016 until his passing in 2017. Most recently, we have been taking care of my Mom, Helen Duke, here in Scottsdale. She moved into assisted living in September 2019 and on to memory care in 2020. She is diagnosed with severe Alzheimer-type dementia, is 88 years young, and physically strong. We are grateful she still knows who we are! Scott is her favorite, makes her laugh, and brings her lots of chocolate! We all made it through the pandemic and, in early 2021, I went back to work full-time (remotely) as an Assessment Manager at University of Phoenix for the College of Education and the College of Nursing. I truly love it! Scott still works full-time, too! For fun, we love to go to classic rock concerts. Before the pandemic, we had recently seen Bob Seger, Van Morrison, and the Eagles, and we will see James Taylor later this summer. We also enjoy traveling. In 2018, we went to Peru and Bolivia. In 2019, we went back to Ireland. We are planning a trip to Italy in 2023 and have several other countries on our "bucket list." Really hope you are all enjoying happy and healthy times! Lots of love to you! Nancy (Duke) Stackhouse
