Nancy's Story
As of June 3, 2007, I married the man of my dreams. He is someone I have known for 20 years as a good friend. We are both empty nesters and having the time of our lives.
After graduating from Covina High in 1955, I went to work for General Telephone, in Covina, for about three and a half years. When I graduated, I was 17 years old so I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up.
In 1959, I enrolled at Pasadena Nazarene College and attended there for a year and a half. I then enrolled in Pasadena City College for a semester.
In the summer of 1961, I went to work for Aerojet General in Azusa and worked there for about four years.
I changed jobs and went to work for the Baldwin Park School District in the the administration office. I enjoyed working both places. I met some good friends and co workers.
I got married in 1967, and in 1972 we heard Oregon calling our name. I had a best friend in Salem so we decided to start a new adventure. Oregon has been a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We made our home in a little community where the lumber industry was flourishing. My husband opened up a tv repair shop and I went to work in the lumber mill. I was the second woman, in our town, who was hired to work in the mill. Before 1973 women were not allowed to work in lumber mills. I didn't know anything about lumber but I soon learned and spent the next 19 years working there. I learned how to run a fork lift, operate the big saws, run the chipper and many other things. There is something about going to work every day and smelling fresh lumber being cut that is very invigorating. Among other things, along with enjoying the job, and having a good time, it kept me in shape.
1983 was a difficult year. ...Expand for more
My husband and I got a divorce and he moved back east. The kids and I lived in a house, in the country along a river. I thought it was the most beautiful place in the world.
1993 the mill shut down and since I was considered a "displaced worker" I got the opportunity to go back to school. I enrolled in Clackamas Community College and got my certificate for Medical Assistant. I received my Associate Degree in 1995 and began a new career in the health care field. At 58 years old I still had lots of energy and felt good and have been working in a retirement center for 10 years. I still work part time because I like it.
About 20 years ago, I met a man at a church in which was attending. We were acquaintances for a long time. His wife and I became very good friends and about five and a half years ago, she passed away. Her husband and I continued the friendship until the fall of 2006 realized we were falling in love. On New Years Day of 2007 he asked me to marry him. Since we had been such good friends we thought we would just carry that into a marriage. It was a very good decision.
My two brothers, Jim and John Golding live in the Sacramento area as well as my oldest son at the time. We decided to go to Reno and get married so all my family could attend. My daughter-in-law made all the arrangements for us and all we had to do was show up. It was a fun time. One interesting thing about Roy and I was that he grew up in Rialto CA and I was born and lived in Riverside until I was 13 yrs old and moved to Charter Oak. My aunts and cousins all lived in the Rialto/Bloomington area but never knew the Josi family. What a coinsidence.
Well, that's my story for now. I will add more pictures as I gather them together.
