Nancy's Story

After we graduated, I was accepted into the school of nursing at Charleston General. I loved it and did well until... Tommy Jones, do you remember him? He lived across the street from us in Chesapeake, anyway he joined the Coast Guard and was stationed on an ice cutter, the Storis out of Kodiak, Alaska. He wrote to me at the General and wanted to know if any of the girls there were interested in becoming pen pals with some of the coast guard guys. Several of us agreed we would do it, so the guys sent questionnaires to us and we were suppose to answer them plus send back a picture. Tommy was already engaged to Connie Spainhour from Marmet; so he was just the liason, I guess? Anyway, Ken Jones, from Tampa, FL, picked my questionnaire & picture and we started corresponding. We wrote for over a year with a few holiday calls from the pier in Kodiak. Eventually he ask me to marry him; and since his time was up for that tour he would be going to New Orleans to be reassigned after home leave. He had a buddy that was going to Groton, CT for his next duty station, so Mom & Dad allowed Ken to come to Chesapeake via his buddy and to stay for a couple of weeks so we could get to know each other!!! The school of nursing gave us 2 weeks off each year so I was able to correlate that with when he would be arriving. We had a great time, picked out engagement rings, and about that time my Dad told him it was time he went to Tampa to see his mother (He must have been a mind reader). I went back to nursing school ready to begin my senior year and lo & behold I had morning sickness. Dr. Soulyret? Verified that I was 3 months along so I called Ken and told him but also said he didn't have to marry me if he didn't still feel the same way. I knew he had been home and his old girlfriends were there and he now was stationed in Houston, Texas. He was so excited; that he bought a car off of a guy on the base, a great 1957 Chevy-customized; all chrome removed. Drove to WV & we were married by a JP in Marmet, then went to the Houston area for 5 years. More about him another time.. We were married for 35 years, Have 3 sons, 45, 46, 47, 9 grandchildren, I have contact with, 2 I know of that I don¿t, 2 great-grand sons, that we have no contact with. March 31, 1994 Ken was diagnosed with AML, a form of leukemia, and he died on October 4, 1995. He was 57 years old. Sounds like a soap opera doesn't it; it gets better & worse as time goes on. On February 7th, 2008, I will be single again after an unfortunate decsion, in November of 2006, to marry a guy from Charleston that I had been seeing & then living of & on with from 2001 until 2006. We stayed together for 1 month. But it takes a year of not being together to dissolve a marriage...no-fault at least. If you read my profile on reunion, you'll know that I now live in Elm City, NC and like it real well. It is a small town, doesn't even have a drive thru restaurant. In fact the bank closes from 1-3 every day and not opened at all on the weekends. So you have to learn real quick to plan on getting every thing done when they are opened or use the two non-bank ATM's available in town, or go to Wilson the next larger city...only 10 minutes away just a hassle I don't want. My Late husband, Ken, retired with 21+ years in the Coast Guard and then retired from the Postal Service in 1993¿So we moved around a bit, 5 years-Houston, Texas-1 year-Vietnam for him-Chesapeake for ...Expand for more
me & the boys, then 2 years-Tampa, FL,-3 years- Key West, FL-3 years-San Juan, PR-2 years-Boston, Mass-4 years-Merrimack, NH...where we lived when he retired from the Coast Guard¿then we moved back to WV-for 10 years and finally we transferred to Sarasota,FL to be near his elderly mother in Tampa and he retired from the Post Office there¿3 years after he passed away I moved back to Chesapeake, after my Mom died, in 1998 to take care of my Dad, he was able to stay at home for only 2 years and then he moved into a really nice assisted living facility up South Park Road in Kanawha City¿It used to be a part of the Union Mission facilities, Bill Cordele, Allen Pack & another local guy formed a corporation and had several of these places plus an Alzheimer unit in Marmet¿ I started out working in Houston as an examining nurse, which I could do as an undergraduate..Ken was the Coach of the All Coast Guard Rifle & Pistol Team so he traveled the eastern seaboard each summer until the final matches at Camp Perry, Ohio...I would get to go home to Chesapeake & spend the summer with Mom & Dad...After Viet Nam, which he went in the first Squadron the Coast Guard -sent as a Gunner's Mate...We moved to Tampa & I began working in an office environment...Thank goodness for Ms. Graham & her bookkeeping class plus my Mom & Dad's grocery store in Chesapeake I finally found where my niche in life was...For more than 30 years I was the Head Bookkeeper-Defacto Controller for several large entities from a diverse field including Manufacturing, Classical Radio Station, Board of Realtors-MLS, Real Estate-Sales-Construction-& Consulting Engineers...Eventually running my own business as a Book Distributor covering the central section of the West Coast of Florida...I offically retired in 1998 when I could draw Ken's SS and then began helping Dad with the family holdings...As he declined I became the General Manager for the family's holdings and continue to do so today... As I mentioned in my likes; I love Ballroom Dancing, I was raised in the Freewill Baptist Church, which at that time at least did not allow dancing, but in 1992 I began taking lessons at Fred Astaire Studios, My Mom & Dad were visiting me in Fl and I was able to do an exhibition dance for the entire family, Dad's loving remark was that "It shows that you love it & that you are very good, I'm proud of you."..Each Studio has a charity benefit where a stage show is presented & I was lucky enough to be able to appear in 2 of those...I love learning the routines & being on stage...And have been lucky to have had professional training from some of the Dancing with Stars Pros...I have competed in several competions and have numerous medals & fond memories...My last major comp was in 1998 in Phoenix, AZ at the Sunshine Star Ball...It is sort of my alter ego, False eyelashes, lots of make-up, revealing latin gowns & flowing Smooth Dance gowns, all of those things I couldn't or at least didn't do growing up...I continue to take lessons every Friday evening...here in NC, plus of course being here I had to learn how to really shag...I had started lessons in Charleston but the ones here have been from past Champions and much more involved & I will continue after the instructors finish their National competion in March... I'm keeping busy now renovating a house for my youngest son & his family, so I'm happy...and anxious to see all of you in September...Nancy
