Nancy's Story

Life Happy New Year 2008!!! The first couple of paragraphs are new, and the rest is pretty much the same as when first written. Our big news is that my dad got remarried at the end of December!!! Dad's college roommate, Jim, died around the time that my Mom died. Dad has known Jim's widow Elly for 54 years, and over the course of 2007 they became more than friends. Having seen the depths of my father's loss, I'm more than happy for him. Connor carried Elly's bible and Makena rode down the aisle in a decorated wagon pulled by Elly's grand-daughter. I now have 5 more siblings and I can't even count the cousins! Makena is getting really good at sitting up, clapping, and waving and is blabbering all of the time. She's little miss social; no matter what toy she's holding, she'll drop it instantly, smile, and want to play with anyone who comes to her. It's really cool to see. Connor is a fabulous big brother and is her hero. All he has to do is look at her and she will laugh, beaming at him. Life is good. I married Clint (Kentridge 87) in 1996 and we have two beautiful children. Connor is 5.5 and Makena is 9.5 months old as of the beginning of the new year. They're both happy and healthy, and we consider ourselves very blessed to have them. I am a CPA and worked as a tax accountant for 12 years before "retiring" to be a stay at home mom. It's not really retiring, though, as it's the hardest job I've ever had!!! We've been in Portland, Oregon since 1994. I like it here, but I still miss watching the sun set over the trees on Eld Inlet. My Dad still lives there (Mom died in 2004) so we visit and go to the beach often. My dream is to some day move back to Olympia in a neighborhood with waterfront just like the house where I grew up. I want my kids to appreciate the trees, the beach, the quiet of Olympia compared to Seattle and Portland where we've lived. But that's not likely to happen soon. Clint's with Intel and things are going well here. Our travels have definitely changed since we had kids. I caught the travel bug from my parents and dragged Clint all over the world - literally - before we settled down. Also, my job in international tax took me on assignment to many countries, one of my favorite parts of the job. I almost always managed to slip in a vacation at the end of the work assignment, even if just for a few days. The only two continents I haven't been to yet are South America and Antarctica. Those continents will have to wait a few years until the kids are older; for now, it's Disneyland, Seaworld, and anywhere with a pool. If you knew me in high school or college, you know that drill team was my life. Big-time. Since there's no such thing as an adult drill team, I took up teaching aerobics after I got out of undergrad. Sixteen and a half years later, I'm still teaching step, hi/lo, yoga, weight training, and mixed format classes. It keeps me sane. I also like to craft for sanity / stress relief. I do rubber stamp art and scrap-booking, and LOVE to take pictures. I volunteer for the Northwest Down Syndrome Association here in Portland, participating in their annual Buddy Walk, decorating their office space, and speaking at their educational seminars. That's me in a nutshell. If you read this far, thanks. ...Expand for more
I hope you're healthy, well, and happy in life. Workplace I started my work experience for ESD #113, where I did payroll during the summers between school years. It came as second nature and several co-workers told me I was a "born accountant." I would laugh and say that accountants are boring and that there was no way on earth I would be one. After college, the ESD hired me to be a field representative in their Mason County office, working with at-risk youth. My job was to teach kids job-search, interviewing and job-keeping skills. It was very challenging and gave me a real appreciation of the life and opportunities that I'd had up until then. Being so self-driven, it was hard for me to understand kids who weren't. Disillusioned with my counseling position, I started a bungy jumping business with a coworker. No lie. For a while, we had the highest jump in the US, 400 feet from a hot air balloon. We didn't have an accountant to keep our books or do our taxes etc., so I started doing it. That's when I decided that maybe I was an accountant after all. I had taken NO accounting classes when I made this decision, so I took several courses at night school while continuing to work. I took the GMAT and suddenly had all sorts of choices, but I chose UW to be close to my boyfriend (who now happens to be my husband, so I guess I made a good choice!). In 2 years and one quarter, I earned a masters in tax accounting and an MBA. My first job as a tax accountant was with KPMG Peat Marwick (now KPMG) in Portland, Oregon. Having owned my own start up company, I was really interested in working with start-ups in the Portland practice. I loved the variety and bustle of working in public accounting and I wasn't thinking of leaving, but one of my managers took a director position at a public company and asked me to go with her. I left KPMG in February, 1997, narrowly escaping the individual busy season! From 1997 to the end of 2005, I worked at Mentor Graphics, a software company that designs the software tools that other companies use in designing circuits and printed circuit boards. My role started out as an international tax preparer, doing the US reporting for Mentor's subsidiaries all over the world. Everything I learned about international tax was from on-the-job training and lucky for me Mentor had a complicated tax structure so I learned a lot! I became a manager of international tax, working in the areas of transfer pricing, cost-sharing, and compliance supervision, acquisition integration, and the always-interesting "other duties as assigned." For a few years, I was also the manager of the payroll department. I truly loved my job and the entire tax team at Mentor and am grateful for the time I spent there. But as 2005 came to a close, some changes in our family life made it possible for me to do something I'd dreamed about for three years - become a stay-at-home mom. For now, I've hung up my CPA hat and am at home with two young children. As a perfectionist / workaholic / competitive person, I've always worked hard in any job I've held, but I can truthfully say that I've worked hardest at being a mom. One of these days I'd like to return to work in the tax field, but until then you'll find me at the playground or under a pile of laundry.
