Nancy Lulu's Story
I'm still living in LA, even though I promise myself I'll move every August and September (too much heat and smog).
Going to Berkeley was pretty interesting; strange that it will be 30 years next year. I made lifetime friends there, for which I am forever grateful. Loved working, but wanted to learn more; found Irvine and received a great education.
Going from Danville to Berkeley to LA to Orange County to working for the City of Glendale, to working for Cal State Northridge, to going to Claremont... Well, it's certainly been a wild ride. Learned a lot from living in environments where the people are diverse, have different values and political views. Ended up in Crisis Management as a career on a fluke--isn't that often the case? When I started no one was interested in the field--now, after 9/11 and the climate crisis, there's much more interest in the field.
My journey through life has been complex; I'm just grateful that I'm alive. A life threatening disease with long-term consequences rocked my world, and gave me new perspectives on life, the universe and everything:-)
I live in a sweet little community--wonderful people, places to hang out, parks,...Expand for more
schools, libraries. A little place in one of the largest cities in the US, and I love it.
I've taught at Cal State LA on and off for the past 5 years (and other places too), and love, love, love teaching. My students are tremendously diverse, and teach me more than I can ever teach them. I was lucky to have fabulous role models. Our teachers at SRVHS were terrific--I have cherised memories, especially of Mr. Chamberlain and Senora Neill.
I'm still a vegetarian although my dogs and cats are not. Ah, such are the contradictions of this life.
I'm always thankful for the education I received at Vista Grande, Charlotte Wood, and San Ramon Valley High. We were the lucky ones, when our education system in California was much better than it is now, and I know it. With that, I try to "pay it forward" by doing everything I can to help the kids and young adults in my life with whatever I know (not very much, sometimes--it's pretty easy to forget some subjects!)
My hope and prayers go out to you and your loved ones. May you always be blessed.
Lulu
Oh, that's right--I've gone by Lulu since the first week in Berkeley--initially not by choice, eventually by choice:-)
