Nancy's Story
After graduation I went to nursing school in Newport News. On my first Christmas break I was hit by a drunk driver and was out of school for more than a year. I eventually went back to school but changed my major to Psychology and graduated from Mary Baldwin in 1976.
After graduation I left Staunton and began to teach in Northern VA. I lived all over the NOVA area. I met my husband (David) and we married in the late 80's -- I do remembering kissing a lot of "frogs" before the prince :)
After a successful teaching career in one of the largest school systems in the US, I cofounded INCIID --- The International council on Infertility Information Dissemination, Inc. (INCIID --- pronounced "inside") a nonprofit --- this after my own battles with infertility and 4 pregnancy losses. In December 2005 People Magazine did an article on one of the programs I set up for those who need medical treatment to conceive but have no insurance to cover the process.
I now have two children, one through...Expand for more
treatment and the other through the miracle of adoption. I also serve as the as executive director for INCIID Inc.
My two girls are wonderful. My oldest just recently started HS. Here high school hosted President Obama the first day of school this past year. His motorcade basically shut down our neighborhood during his visit.
My youngest was adopted from China in 2001 and suffers the results of very extreme abuse and neglect. In 2006 we arranged to have a service dog placed with her. In 2007 I helped re-write and update the service dog laws in the state of VA so that children who have service animals are recognized as three unit teams. Va was the first in the US to recognize these service teams.
I continue to be active as an advocate for parents of special needs students and specialize with students who have been traumatized as children. I am working to get those in authority to understand the very dire need we have in VA and around the country for a trauma sensitive education.
