Nancy's Story

Life What can I say? 3 different high schools in 4 years, but that's the life of an Air Force brat. We moved from Hawai'i in 1975, which meant leaving Mililani High School after freshman year. Dad was stationed at Grissom Air Force Base, so I attended Taylor High School, in Indiana. After a year at Grissom he decided to retire. Pilots don't like to be desk jockey's & he had finished his 25 years. We moved to Alabama, where both of my parents were from, and I ended up finishing my last 2 years of high school in the same school, Vestavia Hills High School! The same school, 2 years in a row! Imagine that! I have been living in the same town for over 40 years now. I always wondered what it would be like to not pick up & move every 4-5 years. I will admit every 10 years I have had 'itchy feet' and wanted to move. Funny how old habits die hard. I guess that is why I like to rearrange my furniture so much and what initially lead me into a career as a Home Stager and Color Consultant? The proliferation of 'home decorating' & 'flipping' shows on television eventually lead to the end of that career, as everyone feels they can do what a decorator or stager does, and for much less. Hey, I can't argue there, because SOME really can, and others, well it's their home and if they are happy with it, who is anyone to say? That lead me to the exciting career of retail sales in a local jewelry store, which is run by dear family friends. It's never a dull moment, someone always walks in the door with a question, an idea or a problem that needs solving. Once again, my early life of moving around and having to learn to make friends and talk to strangers has given me a gift of gab that I never knew I had...I'm actually pretty darned good at this 'sales' thing. It's fun too, although my feet do ache after spending 8 hours a day on them, at least my Fitbit knows I'm getting my 10,000 steps in daily. College Auburn University was a blast. I totally enjoyed my 3 years there. A little too much... *shakes head* Still considering returning to finish, but then again it's kind of nice to being doing my own thing now, even without a college degree. I did dabble at Samford for a year, before I got married, in Paralegal studies and it's true when people say that a little knowledge can be dangerous. Do NOT ask me for legal advice, but I could probably cite you a few things, if held under severe duress. The Rest I married my college sweetheart in '83. He's a General Contractor with a 100+ year old family owned business. To toot his horn a bit, they built the Jule Collins Smith Museum in Auburn, Alabama, and it was specifically his project. My kids basically grew up playing on the site. Speaking of which... I am the proud mother of three children. Two boys, with a daughter sandwiched in between. Our oldest son graduated from high school in 2007 & is a Business graduate of Faulkner University, after a year at Campbell University in Pre-Pharm, a brief (2 year) flirtation in Atlanta, in culinary school, and obtaining his A.D. from Southern Union Community College, in Business. gured out what he wanted to be when he grew up there was really no stopping him. He worked part time at Lowe's in the paint department, while finishing school, so that construction biz didn't really get out of his veins. He transferred to Bessemer in 2018 and worked with Sherwin-WIlliams for a few years and was hired by Induron in Birmingham, AL, where he is in charge of shipping and customer service. He recently bought his first house, in Gardendale, AL. Our daughter graduated from high school in 2009. She is on a current academic break, for health reasons, but lacks only 2 semesters until graduation from Auburn University with a degree in Media. In 2016 she had minor (they said!) brain surgery at Emory in Atlanta and is doing fairly well, but it opened up a new can of worms, Dysautonomia, aka POTS. Basically her autonomic nervous system (ANS) does not work properly, so there are good days and bad days and exhausted days and forgetful days. She still hopes to finish out her degree one day. Our youngest gradated from high school in 2011 and has a degree in History from Auburn University. He began his college career in Graphic Design, but after 2 years he decided that it wasn't 'his thing' (did I mention he's a free spirit?). He changed his major to History, and so a lot of his credits for his first two years in school were rendered basically a wash, although he has some interesting "electives" that gave him a minor in Art. With this History degree (and art minor), he joined the family construction business upon graduation and is now a project manager for the very large (yeah, being obscure here) community the company has been in charge of, for almost 20 years. He's killer at kitchen design, btw. All 3 kids are still single, still not dating anyone 'seriously' and so yeah, no grandchildren so far. First Job My first job was at Farrell's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour at Brookwood Mall, where I got paid minimum wage to totally humiliate myself & wait tables. What I remember most about it is the loud whistles, sirens and bad uniforms. The best part was working with DeeAnn McAnally and Matt Brown, the worst part was cleaning the tables and the floors after hours and the hair nets. Reunions I guess I will always have my pick of 3 different high school reunions? Mililani High School (go Trojans!), my first high school and the one I love the most, and where I still keep up with some of my fellow BRATS. Taylor High (Titans!), where I was only there for one year, and while I remember some names and a few faces, it's doubtful anyone would remember me. I hated having to miss my 40th reunion for Vestavia Hills High (are we still Rebels? I dunno), but it fell on the same weekend of my 35th wedding anniversary, and well, priorities...Hopefully when the 50th reunion rolls around, I'll be able to make one or two, or hey all 3! The older we get, the dimmer our memories become anyway, so I might convince someone that they DO actually remember me, even if they don't now, oh and visa versa I feel sure. That COULD be a plan!
