Naomi's Story

I am Naomi Garcia, formerly known as Naomi Rivera. I moved from Brooklyn, New York at age 11 with all my family to Los Angeles, California. That is where I grew up. I remember attending Buford Elementary School, Felton Jr. High, and Lennox High. Boy what a bad experience it was for me at times! Especially, because I was considered a nerd and teased so much. Having a New York accent didn't help me either. Kids used to call me chicken legs, four eyes, because I wore prescription glasses, or big mama. Although, I didn't have problems with my weight. I was a tall, slender young lady. Many would ask me why I spoke the way I did. At first I couldn't tell that my way of speaking was any different from the other children. I remember promissing myself to learn how to talk like everyone else did in school. My mom, God bless her, would tell me not to worry about the children who teased me. She would say, "they're jealous so just ignore them." I really wanted to believe that. Honestly, it didn't feel that way to me. My self-esteem was truly in the gutter! I sometimes dreaded having to go to school. There were days I hated myself!! I prayed almost every night to God and asked Him to help me love unconditionally, whether or not others cared or loved me. In my heart was a great desire to help others as much as I could. I didn't want to be different than my peers in school, but despite my efforts to belong to something, or for me to feel "normal," I can only say I related to people from church more than anything. What helped me throughout the years when I was in school is that I learned how to play guitar and sing at a young age. My father, who is a musician, taught me. I also loved to read and learn. So I spent a lot of time writing songs, stories and making postcards out of scratch in order to take my mind off of negative thoughts. Everything I wrote related to loneliness, sadness, or love and hope. Many of the pictures I drew were hearts of different colors, red roses (my favorite color and flower), trees done in pencil showing falling leaves to the ground an...Expand for more
d grey skies as a reflection of how I felt. I realized I was very depressed most of the time. I cried almost everyday. But, music, drawing and reading all saved me. I just sang my heart out until I couldn't anymore. All the drawings I made was a form of venting for me as well. The positive things I did in school to try and get other classmates to like me wasn't in vain. At least I would like to think so. I managed to make some friends in school. I figured that if I was so different from all others maybe there was a special purpose for me in life. And you know what, I was right! Things eventually got better for me. The teasing stopped once I started high school. I often wondered what became of all my classmates, those who were my friends and the ones who didn't like me. Knowing myself the way I do. Being the person I am while growing up, with the things that happened to me in school didn't affect me in a negative way. On the contrary it made me strong and wise. I am the oldest of five. I took care of my younger brothers and sisters. Therefore, my level of expertise is caring for others. It didn't stop with my immediate family that is for sure. I grew a passion for nursing. I got married young and had eight children of my own. So when I decided to continue my education I became a nurse assistant. I am currently taking college classes, because I am working on getting my R.N. license. I am happy to say that the teacher's who believed in me to do the right thing impacted my life tremendously, apart from the people in church, which also includes my family. I turned out to be a good person despite the bad experiences I have had in the past. I am a single mother now. I got divorced in 2007. Nevertheless, I continue to move forward as I accomplish the goals I have set for myself. Getting an education is absolutely the way to go. Certainly, life growing up was very hard for me, but I am a survivor!! I enjoy making other people feel good about themselves and nursing them to health if it is ever at all possible. And, I do it all with a smile. Naomi :-)
