Nathaniel's Story

Nathaniel is from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Nathaniel later attended Colorado College (Classics) . Music Nathaniel likes includes Room 46, Bach, Chant. Books Nathaniel likes include On the Incarnation, Church Dogmatics, The Vision of God. Movies Nathaniel likes include Into Great Silence. TV shows Nathaniel likes include EWTN, 4E TV, Pushing Daisies. One of Nathaniel's favorite quotes is:"εν αρχη ην ο λογος, και ο λογος ην προς τον θεον, και θεος ην ο λογος. --- "Anxiety over the victory of the Gospel--that is, Christian apologetics--is meaningless, the Gospel is the Victory through which God overcomes the world." --Karl Barth --- Veni, Creator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia quae tu creasti pectora. --- "Acquire a peaceful spirit and thousands around you will be saved." --St. Seraphim of Sarov --- "An instant of pure love is more precious in the sight of God and more profitable to the Church than all other good works put together, though it may seem that nothing is done. Let those men of zeal who think that by their preaching and exterior works to convert the world, consider that they would be much more pleasing to God (to say nothing of the example that they would give) if they would spend at least one-half of their time in prayer, even if they may not have attained to unitive love. Certainly they would do more, and with less trouble, by one single good work than by a thousand; because of the merit of their prayer, and the spiritual strength it supplies." --St. John of the Cross --- John Mbiti was the first African to get a Doctorate in Germany. When he returned home, his tribe threw a great party to celebrate his achievement. It so happened that during the ceremony, a woman in the crowd became possessed by a spirit. The tribe elder said to him, "Now that you have studied the Bible in Germany, come, cast out the evil spirit from this woman." "Well," said Mbiti, "As you know, I studied with Bultmann. He says there are no evil spirits. He has demytho...Expand for more
logized all." Perplexed, the crowd replied, "What was the good of studying in Europe? Before, you could heal. Now, you cannot." --Retold from RS Sugirtharajah For a society that is in danger of losing even the distant memories of its root religious civilization, at a time when its preferred religions have shrunk back in the face of serious social decline, and its schools of political, philosophical, and artistic thought have elevated short-term, self-interest to new heights, the Church's task is not less than to show the way back to a renewed sense of the Beautiful. It will be in the Christian reinterpretation of the Greek notion of kalokagathon, no less than the ideal synthesis of a religious, mystical, and moral transcendental. ... If the Chruch can find the wit, and the energy, for the task, then this pro-paideusis will be no less than the re-evangelization of the western world. -- John McGuckin". More about Nathaniel:"I graduated from Colorado College in December of 2006 with a degree in the Classics. I married the beautiful Sarah Switzer (now Sarah Kidd) on New Year's Eve 2007. I spent a year as the Physics Paraprof at CC and a Tutor. Then we renounced the world and went on pilgrimage in India and Pakistan. After returning to the States, I enrolled in seminary at Nashotah House, where I have completed two years of formation for life and ministry in an insane world. While holding lightly to our plans, we are anticipating that the next stage on our journey will be more schooling. I'm looking toward the study of Patristics and/or Liturgics. I have some concerns about being abducted into the academic stratosphere, but hope that these may be mitigated by consciously maintaining our connection to the life, worship and ministry of the Church. I feel some vocational tug towards engagement in ecumenical East-West issues: there is so much in the Orthodox traditions that we in the Catholic and Protestant traditions of the West are totally unaware of. I would love to make some of that treasure accessible to modern Western people.".
