Neal's Story
Life
My life has been an attempt to live out my fatherÂs dream: to make this world a better place and bring people together. In all of my years of teaching and administration, my goal has been to get students, parents, teachers, and administrators to work together for the welfare of our students. That has been my mission throughout my career.
I have lived all of my life in and around Los Angeles. I attended Los Angeles Unified School District since the fifth grade, graduated from James Monroe High School in 1963 and earned my degree from UCLA in 1967. I stayed another year to earn my lifetime secondary teaching credential. In the fall of 1968, I started teaching at Alaine Locke High School and this year retired after thirty-eight years with LAUSD.
As a youngster, I lived briefly in Norwalk, most of the other early years just on the Los Angeles side of Forrest Lawn. I went to Fletcher Drive Elementary School and Washington Irving Junior High until we moved to the San Fernando Valley. I attended Patrick Henry Junior High until Porter was built and graduated from Porter Junior High in 1960. All three years of high school were at Monroe.
As an adult, I have lived in the 7th School Board District. I lived first in Gardena, and later in Carson. The last twenty-seven years I have resided in the same house in San Pedro. I have two children who both graduated from San Pedro High School. My daughter works as an Assistant Principal in Redondo Beach and my son is a music producer. I am very proud of both of them as well as my one grandson who is in elementary school in San Pedro and is a special needs student.
After thirteen years at Locke, I worked for eleven more as a Dean of Students at Stephen White Junior High in Carson. It was there that I completed my MasterÂs Degree in Education and also my Administrative Credential through Cal ...Expand for more
Lutheran University. In March of 1993, I became an Assistant Principal at Rudicenda Dodson Junior High and in September of that year I moved over to Richard Henry Dana Junior High as Assistant Principal. I was there when we became a Âmiddle school and feel that this is the age where with a moral and financial commitment on the part of the school and the district, a solid groundwork will be established that will greatly reduce the Âdropout numbers in high school.
In 2001, I had the honor to be selected as principal at John Muir Middle School, where I retired in August of this year. I have had the wonderful opportunity to bring my ideas of collaboration and mutual respect to John Muir and I feel that the school served as a model of what can be accomplished in a familial atmosphere. I challenged anyone who was interested to drop by John Muir and walk the campus with me.
I know that I do represent all of the diversity in this district. I am bilingual and my children are racially mixed. I was a charter member of UTLA and a veteran of the strikes in 1970 and 1989. I was a Chapter Chair one year at Stephen White. As an administrator, I have not forgotten what I learned as a teacher: that schools whose teachers and administrators work together are the most successful. Presently, I serve as a representative of the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles on the BoardÂs subcommittee on Student Health and Safety. I also am an instructor in California State University, NorthridgeÂs Local District 7 cohort for teachers who are pursuing their masterÂs degree and administrative credential.
I am committed to public education in general and specifically to public education in Los Angeles. I want all students in Los Angeles to have the same opportunities that were afforded to me and my children.
