Neil's Story

Life Attended the U. of I., graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Math (with Computer Emphasis). Joined the Marching Band, playing saxophone, and always hoped we'd get to travel to a big bowl game. Even stayed in while I was in graduate school, making a total of six years, but no luck. *sigh* Then... three years or so after leaving... Rose Bowl! Oh well... Worked for the University for almost two years as a programmer, then did a short job in Davenport at a microcomputer store. Next, I did consulting and programming for about two years. Got married in Sept. 1981 to Debi, who is originally from Ohio. Her daughter was two at the time. We moved to Houston, TX in 1982 for about a year, where Whitney was born, then moved back to Iowa City, staying almost four years, working out of an office in Cedar Rapids. Scott was born in 1984. We then moved to Wichita, KS for about 18 months. My next job took us to Mt. View, CA for just over a year. I transferred to Georgia Sept. 30, 1989, just 17 days before the big earthquake hit the area during the World Series. We moved to Marietta, staying until 1994 and adding Eric, our foster son, shortly after arriving. We then moved to Colorado Springs, staying there three years. In 1997, we moved back to Marietta, and I think we've finally settled down for at least as long as it takes for Scott to graduate high school. Then... who knows? ;-) Somewhere in there, I learned to water ski, snow ski, scuba dive, sky dive and got a pilot's license. I also joined a Barbershop Chorus for two years, and was part of a Gospel Quartet for two years in Colorado. I write a little poetry and a few limericks now and then, working on my first novel and still play some Joplin ragtime music on the piano. menting our family's genealogy. We were quite surprised to find out (34 years after graduation!) that the Larews (Jim, Rick and Phil) are/were fourth cousins, once removed. We were *ALL* surprised to find out just how far back it can be traced. As of April, 2021. we now have fourteen grandchildren. College I won't say that my memories of college were skewed, but the first exposure I had to the "college" experience was a rush party at a fraternity... Need I say more? Actually, it wasn't so bad. I had one of the thousands of "pre-med" majors, at first... and even managed to get a job at the hospital as an orderly doing surgical preps. Somewhere along the way, though, I got exposed to using a computer and the rest, as they say, is history. Got a B.A. in Math (with computer emphasis) and proceeded to start working at the U. of I. for a grant-funded project developing educational software. Later, I started doing some freelance programming and consulting. I took a couple years of grad school, but never did complete my M.S. degree. Given the events that have led me to where I am now, however, I haven't regretted that. I still work in the computer business, doing technical problem-solving over the phone. The biggest part of college that I still participate in is the Alumni Marching Band. It's a great chance to rekindle old friendships and re-live some memories of when we *didn't* have a nationally-rated team and kept desperately wishing that, somehow, we'd make it to the Rose Bowl with the Band. ;-) Workplace Started in the computer biz, as they say, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... ;-) Well, that's what it seems like, sometimes, considering where computers have progressed from. Currently, I provide over-the-phone technical support for companies/people having hardware trouble with their machine(s). These are usually the "bigger" machines... not PC's.
