Neil's Story

Neil's roots are in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and include years spent at Holy Rosary School ('65) and Central Catholic High School ('69). In 1953, my dad took a job with Hughes Aircraft Company, Culver City, California. We lived in Inglewood, and I attended St. Joseph's School, Hawthorne. We were on the west coast until November 1962, when we returned to Massachusetts. I was in 6th grade, and finished my elementary education at Holy Rosary, then on to Central Catholic. After stint with the Archdiocese of Boston, the General Electric Company, and the National Park Service, I spent many years teaching in the high school classroom. I retired in 2016 and, for the second time, took my "dream job" as a national park ranger at Minute Man National Historical Park, in Massachusetts. I worked it a total of seven seasons - two during the excitement of the Bicentennial - and enjoyed every minute, wrapping up my time with NPS in the fall of 2021. Currently, I continue to teach one or two courses a semester at the college level; otherwise, settling in to a slightly slower (HA!) pace. Fall semester 2023 was exciting! After 23 years teaching English to second language adults, I was invited to step into the Early College program, teaching English 101 and an ESL support class to 11th and 12th graders from Lawrence High School. It was a homecoming of sorts, and the students were phenomenal! I also agreed to help out at the Merrimack Valley Immigration and Education Center, in South Lawrence, working with newly arrived adults who have limited to no English-speaking skills. It's been rewarding; I have a renewed appreciation for the special challenges immigrants face. Did a photography shoot for the National Park Service March 3rd (2024), at Minute Man National Historical Park. and another, April 14, for 2024 Patriots' Day commemorations. We got in a couple of walks along sections of the Battle Road as part of the sessions. It is a privilege to work the photography, especially this year: the photos will be used next year to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution! 2023 wasn't much of one for travel. cularly, if it wasn't hot, it was wet - and there didn't seem to be anyplace anywhere that offered an escape from either. My travels to New England's national wildlife refuges will be put off for awhile. Meanwhile, we did get to Florida for a week with the family - and spent only one day at WDW (Animal Kingdom and EPCOT). There is a world beyond Disney in Central Florida. Neil's interests include: Conservation and Preservation; Cooking; Current Events; Family and Genealogy; Education; Films; Hiking; Languages; National Parks and Public Lands; Photography; Politics; Reading; Travel. Culinary Adventures: Pomodori Con Riso is a recipe right out of Rome's Jewish neighborhoods. This baked stuffed tomato holds on the meat, more than compensates with arborio rice, olive oil, and fresh basil. A real burst of sunshine! Neil's Music likes: Classical; Country; Current; International; Jazz; Greatest Hits of the Sixties. Irish Rap!?! Who knew...? Books: Neil is currently reading: THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (Gordon S. Wood). Neil's reading likes: History; Historic Fiction; Drama; Mystery and Suspense; Cookbooks and Food History; National Parks History. Neil's recent reads: Oath and Honor (Liz Cheney); My Life on the Rock (Jeff Cavins); The Boys in the Boat (Daniel James Brown); King Solomon's Mines (H. Ryder Haggard); My Life In France (Julia Child). . . . I post my reviews on Goodreads. Movies Neil likes: any good Comedy; Documentary films; Drama; any good Musical; Mystery; Suspense; Science Fiction. Last seen in theater: CIVIL WAR (exceptional film, but troubling, even disturbing). Recently watched at home: 2012; The Killer; La Sociedad de la Nieve (The Society of the Snow); Bridge on the River Kwai; Schindler's List. TV shows Neil likes: The FBI (the entire franchise from the creators of LAW & ORDER is worth watching); Vera - Season 13; Murder Is Easy (this 2-episode miniseries is a remake of Agatha' Christie's novel); Blue Lights; Father Brown. Other shows worth watching: anything from British TV, HGTV, National Geographic, or PBS. One of Neil's favorite quotes is: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."
