Nellie's Story
Life
I finally graduated from college with a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Wouldn't you know I was the oldest one in my class. I live with 6 dogs, 4 cats, one parakeet, and one fish. Unfortunately, my pot-bellied pig passed away during an unseasonably cold winter. I raise quail for food and eggs. The are more prolific than rabbits.
After graduation, I worked at the intensive care unit in the vet school for a while then obtained a job in cancer research doing in vivo studies with radiopharmaceuticals in research mice. No Virginia, radioactivity does not make you glow in the dark. It does make you respect the stuff and act extremely careful around it though. ector on the MU campus and can be found on a medline search for my work.
I finally took my first real vacation in 20 years on a Delbert McClinton blues cruise January 2002 to the Bahamas. Seven days of nothing but music. It was so much fun, I'm going back in 2003.
My future plans are to move back to the Springfield area and open up a doggie day care and specialize in the doggie pediatric/geriatric field with spay/neutering and vaccination clinics included (possibly pet grieving counciling and a crematorium included).
If someone would have told me in 1972 what I would have accomplished by the year 2002, I think I would have laughed in their face, because I am still amazed at the fact that I have been able to have accomplished my goal to become a veterinarian. My love for animals is my driving force in my life and God has blessed me with my ability to achieve my goals.
