Nelson's Story

Greetings one and all, After BJH, it was off to Silver Heights and then U of M in the Engineering faculty. With a tough job market in the early 80's, I joined the Air Force as an engineering officer and what was to be a 4 year experience turned into a 20 year career allowing myself and the growing family the opportunity to live in interesting places all around the world (Australia, England) and get my masters in aerospace design along the way (if anyone needs a WWII bomber designed..... well that was what they taught us.... the instructors were a bit aged). I spent my military career primarily in F-18 operations and flight testing with only 1 year of penance in Ottawa (where I spent a year trying to buy Maritime Helicopters that the powers that be had no realt interest in actually buying!) At age 40, I resigned my commission to take up a position, in of all places, Winnipeg with a company called Standard Aero (I guess I missed -40C temperatures, flooding, and mosquitos). I did 10 years with Standard Aero and was fortunate to have been able to move around and up in the company in a great period of growth. I left in 2010 with the ability to take a sabbatical of sorts: 5 weeks delivering a sailboat from Panama to...Expand for more
St Martens via Columbia, Aruba, Hurricane Tomas and the unexpected boarding by armed Guarda! After that, I acquired a company, did some consulting, and most recently signed on to the Princess Auto Group running their Shur-Lift manufacturing division. Along the way, fell in love, got married, generated 3 sons, acquired and outlived any number of family pets. Expectedly, spent a lot of time in arenas, on soccer fields, and football stadiums watching the boys have fun. When the rest of life steps aside to create a free afternoon or evening, I continue to work on my aircraft project. Hope springs eternal that it will get air under it's wings sometime......and please don't ask the target date. My answer is to "When will it fly?" is always "Just after it's completed." More recently, the sailing bug has taken hold (it's like flying at zero altitude) and we have a cruiser based in Gimli and enjoy chasing the clouds or other boats regularly. If all goes well in 2013, we'll become a "2 boat" family with a share of a boat in the caribbean as well. For some reason, Winnipeg winters seem colder as I get older.... Otherwise, life and health are good and I hope it is the same for anyone reading this. Yours, Nelson Barrett
