Nicelma's Story
Life
After Dorsey, I went to Cal State LA for two years, and then to UCLA to finish my BA (English, '69). I continued straight through and got an M.A. and a PhD by 1976. During my career, I have taught at Long Beach State, USC, and Compton College, and worked as a researcher at Rand Corporation. I have worked for the University of California for the past 36 years, and I taught in the Science and Society Program and am in the Department of Human and Community Development at UC Davis. ...Expand for more
I retired (finally) in 2019 after being recalled to chair the Department of African and African American Studies at UC Davis. My husband and I spent the year traveling and cruising : Cuba, Hawaii, and Alaska, as well as many trips to SoCal. My beloved sweetie passed very suddenly in November 2019 after never admitting he wasn't well. I miss him every day.
I enjoy reading, sewing, and jewelry making, and am writing a book on Black California, which I expect to be published in 2022.
