Nicholas's Story
A few years after leaving Southern Adventist University, I moved to Austria in 1997 to study German at a private school in Bogenhofen, just outside of Braunau. In 1999, I moved to Romania to volunteer at a small orphanage deep in the mountains of Transylvania. It was such a great experience, i returned to Romania in 2001 to teach English in a nearby city. That summer, I was invited through the sister city association to work two months for the city of Hamm, Germany. Later that year, I took a teaching job in Qingdao, China where I lived until 2006. For the rest of 2006, I worked at a German health food store on the Costa Blanca of Spain. In 2007, I moved to NYC and worked at Serendipity 3 until 2009. but I chose to try my luck finding work in France but after 6 months of searching, I had to give up. In 2010, i travelled through Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Moldova in order to take the Trans Siberian back to Asia but the route through Ukraine was missing a bridge so I ended up flying to Ulan Ude, Russia instead. After a few weeks, i headed to Mongolia where i tried teaching but nearly died from the cold so i took a train back to Qingdao. Although I had previously worked at a five star hotel in Qingdao, I settled on teaching one to one at a very special school that had just opened a branch in Qingdao. I remained there 11 years until the government shut down all training schools about a year after covid. To be continued…
