Nikki's Story

Life Greetings friends! My husband and I recently moved to Albuquerque, NM where he works as a mechanical engineer and I stay at home (see workplace). We are enjoying living in the land of enchantment! , Before ABQ, we lived in Carbondale, Illinois (at the very southern part of the state). We own a 4 bedroom home and live there with our two cats, Midnight and Stormy. We attend the Mountainside Church of Christ, where we are involved in children's ministry activities. Despite being busy here, I miss the little things that make California such a special place to live. I can't wait to get back to CA to see old friends. College College was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life... once I got past needing to go home every weekend and immersed myself in college life. Pepperdine was a great place to study and to grow, overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Looking back, I don't know how we got much studying done, but we managed. Many people I met there will be friends for life, and others whom I think of often bring to mind fond memories of fun and fellowship. After a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Education, then a couple years teaching, I went back to school and earned a BS in Paralegal Studies. I think in some ways, I'll always a student..... Workplace Whirque, wurk, work.... Am I using my degree? Not unless you count advising my husband on his grammar usage. :) I started my work career as an admin clerk at Pepperdine University, leaving that cushy, comfortable job for the wilds of San Diego and a campus ministry that needed help. I found a job as a temp in a human resources office that turned out to be almost a year long event. After a couple months of unemployment, I was convinced by a good...Expand for more
friend at church to try substituting... but at an elementary school. Kids are so little and most can't sit still or follow directions, but my second graders were awesome for the four months I had them. I decided to stay on and accepted a contract to teach sixth grade, and then fifth grade the next year. I loved all my kids! When my husband finished his time in the Navy, we had to leave CA so he could receive "free" schooling in IL. I spent 5 years working as an office manager in the Office of Economic Development at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and moonlighting part-time as a cashier at Wal-Mart. I also sell Longaberger in my spare time. Now that we are in Albquerque, I am I have "retired" from the working world and spend my time as the CEO/CFO of the Nance Family, which means laundry, cleaning, cooking, shopping, accounting, etc. Anyway you look at it, I'm keeping busy. Military I wasn't in the military, but I married a sailor. Being the wife of a sailor was difficult, especially because my husband was on a submarine. When he went to see, I didn't hear from him until he got back to the pier and he called me. There was no email, rare postal mail, and no phone calls except for the time he raced to the deck when they pulled into San Francisco harbor to tell me they were on their way home (over a week LATE!) Apparently, he had to loan his cell phone to the COB in order to gain permission to go topside. :) I admire women who devote themselves to military men... and although all of the branches provide difficult circumstances, most service members have the opportunity to communicate with their family members while they are away. The three years we spent together in the Navy was more than enough for me. :)
