Noreen's Story
Life
Hi Everyone, I'm Noreen Bails from the graduating class of 1966 at Mobile County High School. I've been married for 17 years now to my wonderful husband Jim Lee so of course I'm now 'Noreen Lee'. I studied at BYU graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Music Degree in education. I taught music for about 14 years,,, First at Snowflake Union High School in Snowflake, AZ,,,,then at Singing River Elementary School in Gautier, MS,,,my last few years teaching music was at various Elementary Schools in the Richmond Unified School District in Richmond, CA. The next 14 years of teaching began in the Richmond District in the classroom. I taught a 2/3rd grade class, a 2nd grade, then 4th grade before getting married and moving to Evanston, WY. I only did substitute teaching in WY for 1 year then Jim and I moved back to Bakersfield, CA in 1990. I got a job teaching 2nd grade for a year then was involuntarily moved to 5th grade. I loved teaching the little ones so I transferred to Noble Elementary School where I spent my remaining years teaching first grade in the Bakersfield City School District. I loved it there. We had such a wonderful close knit staff and a very understanding and supportive Principal and office staff. Anyone who has done any teaching knows that a supportive Principal can make all the difference in the world to the teachers under him/her.
Due to severe health problems, due mainly to the polluted air in Bakersfield, CA (the 3rd most polluted city in the US,,, LosAngeles is #1 and Visalia, CA is #2) I retired early on disablilty & Jim & I moved once again (hopefully for the last time) to retire in NorthWest Florida, also known as the panhandle of FL. We live in a small town of Bonifay, Fl which is exactly 50 miles North of Panama City, FL and 50 miles South of Dothan, AL and 100 mi West of Tallasshee, FL and about 100 mi East of Pensacola, FL. I love retirement and now living back in the South I'd love to get back in touch with some old high school frien...Expand for more
ds and neighbors who lived in Whispering Oaks Subdivision in Grand Bay, AL. I attended Mobile County High School from 1963 to 1966, then Brigham Young University in Provo, UT from 1966 to 1972. From then I began teaching as in my bio above while attending several Universities working on graduate credits.
I never had any children of my own, but I've always been extremely close to Jim's only son and daughter-in-law, Steve & Betsy. We now have two beautiful granddaughters Breanna 9 and Brittany 7. They live about 15 hours driving time North of us here in FL and come to visit once or twice a year. I love being a Grandma. Bre and Brit are beautiful kids that Jim & I adore and I adopted Steve & Betsy as my own 17 years ago when I first married Jim.
My health problems have improved, but I'm still unable to teach and that's fine with me, since there is so much to do and so many places to visit and now retirement has made it possible to do anything I want anytime. I hope some of you are able to enjoy an early retirement as I have.
Looks like my "characters" are about to run out. But let me also say that since moving to FL we have weathered several hurricanes, "IVAN" being the worst for us but we've not suffered any severe damage, just lost a couple of trees. We have been very fortunate, and my heart goes out to the people living in the areas hit my "KATRINA" & "RITA". We've participated in several fund raisers for the people and our own city of Bonifay was one of several Red Cross shelters. Volunteering there and meeting the people, just giving a lending hand and ear to hear their horror stories make me appreciate life all the more. If you read this bio and can help in any way or donate specifically for the hurricane victims, please do so. They still need our help.
In closing, I'd like to say that I hope I'll be able to contact several of my old (young at heart) classmates and stay in contact, counting our blessings for all that we have. Noreen (Bails) Lee
