Norman's Story

After graduating from Argo HS, I attended Morton Junior College for 2 years, then transferred to the U of I in Urbana. Graduated with a BSEE degree, worked in Chicago area for a year, married in 1957, and later that year joined the Navy Aviation Officer Candidate program. Off to Pensacola for basic flight training. This was a period of change and re-evaluation of both the Navy and Air Force flight training programs. One tour of duty was not adequate to become fully fleet qualified - and two tours become the minimum requirement. However since the Navy broke the contract, it was no longer a commitment and discharge was an option I took. But I did spend six years in a Reserve Naval Intelligence Unit in Glenview, Il. It was an enjoyable experience. Upon leaving the active duty part of the Navy, I rejoin my civilian career as an Electrical Engineer with Motorola Communications. Spent a life time of 37 years there, starting out on the Augusta Blvd site, then an assignment overseas (England), returning to the USA and the new facility in Schaumburg, IL. Attended Lake Forest College MBA. Moved to Florida when we ...Expand for more
relocated the Portable Products Division in 1971. In those intervening years we have raised three daughters, all now married giving us 6 grand children of which four are now in college and a 5th going next year. They are scattered from close by Tequesta, Florida, to Ashburn, Northern VA (near Washington DC ) and closer to the Illinois homeland, Lake Zurich, Il. I retired from Motorola in 1996, and after a year or so decided I needed more to do and bought an antenna manufacturing company in California and moved it to Florida where my wife Carol and I had great fun operating it for nearly ten years before selling it and retiring for the second time. Now I enjoy my hobby of Amateur Radio (call sign W4QN). We do a lot of domestic and foreign travel (River Cruises being our preference). Life is good, for we have good health, a great family and many good friends. I wish I had been aware of any Argo class reunions as I have many fond memories of the Radio Club, Photography Club, my classmates and teachers; but probably most of all I remember my fellow swim team members - we had a great time in those early 1950's Norm
