Norman's Story

Life I was born June 27th 1940 in Sacramento, California. I am the first born of nine children and any of you who are a first born to large families know what that means...you are held accountable for everything that happens when the folks are away! I figured it out one day, we lived in 22 different homes by the time I was 16. We moved to Chico when I was in the 4th grade at Oakdale Elementary. Our home was at 430 West 10th Street. Carol Gottschalk lived across the street as did Tracy Schaffer. We moved to the north side of Chico and I spent the 5th grade at Shasta Union Elementary. We then lived in Feather Falls, Bald Rock and Oroville where I attended the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, graduating with three others from the Rockerfeller School at Bald Rock above Oroville. My mom, Ritta Jeanette Landerman was the teacher for all eight grades of that one room school. The freshman year and part of my second year was at Oroville High. We moved back to Chico where I attended Chico Senior High (1955-1957) before joining the Marine Corps along with seven of my friends including Tom Jenkins, Bob Williams, Bill Bechtel, Skip Diamantine, Dan O'Malley, Marvin Olson and Larry Pannell. I served in the 5th Marine Regiment, Ist Division at Camp Pendelton, California. After the Marines, I attended College, worked for a few years and then returned to the university life at Califotnia State Polytechnic University earning an undergraduate degree in Urban Planning. My Masters work is in Urban Economics and I decided to pick up a couple of years of law school so as to comprehend "lawyer speak" in the various meetings I attended. I was Chief o...Expand for more
f Planning for City Sciences Corporation which undertook the California Park project on the old Roy Rogers property east of Chico. Later I joined Genge Corporation serving as a project manager for planned communities and then joined the State of California Resources Agency. I was called to fill a special assignment with ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia in 1974 and returned to be appointed by then Governor Ronald Reagan as Chief,Planning and Development with the Resources Agency and was assigned to Cal Expo to facilitate the continuation ofplanning and development for that property. In 1978 I began a private Strategic Planning firm and it continues today serving clients in varrious parts of the United States, primarily in the fields of community and economic development, parks and recreation and the fair and exposition industry. Along the way I have enjoyed the friendship of many good people and became a father to four children. I now have six grand children, and would you believe it, one very special great grand daughter named Anya! Mary and I live on an Island in the San Juans north of Seattle but not so far away from an airport that I can't easily jump on a plane. We built our home from the Japanese Kyoto farm house design qualities and it is a peaceful place to live for the duration. Like many of you must feel, I am sure, the friendships made during those challenging yet wonderful high school years are special and enduring if in thought only. I know we all have busy lives and thanks to this technology we can perhaps greet each other once again before we grow to old to tie our shoe laces or button a blouse. The best to all! Norm
